Police News: Thefts of various items include motorcycle, auto

Aurora -- A handful of thefts were reported to Aurora police recently, including a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

A Moneta Avenue man reported Oct. 30 at 7:25 p.m. that his 1995 motorcycle was taken from his yard. Its value was not given. Police entered the vehicle into the LEADS computer. Police said as of Nov. 9, the vehicle had not been recovered.

On Oct. 31, a West Garfield Road car lot reported a vehicle missing. Records indicated it was last being driven by an ex-employee who lives in Avon.

Local officers asked Avon officers to check the suspect's residence, and they located the vehicle there and impounded it. Police said the matter has been referred to the county prosecutor for review.

On Oct. 30, a Beaumont Trail man reported the theft of a trailer hitch from a truck parked at his residence. Value was listed at $190, and officers said a valve stem on one of the vehicle's tires also was damaged.

On Oct. 31, police discovered a vending machine at Sunny Lake was broken into and an unknown amount of money taken.

Two thefts were reported Nov. 3 at Aurora High School.

One student said a scientific calculator valued at $100 and $1 in cash were taken from his unlocked locker, while another said a similar calculator, iPod Touch and cell phone were taken from his gym bag in an unlocked locker. Value of the latter items was $290.

On Nov. 4, a Cleveland woman was charged with theft and child endangering and a Cleveland man and Maple Heights woman were charged with child endangering in connection with a shoplifting incident at Aurora Farms Premium Outlets.

The suspects left in a vehicle, which police said crashed into another vehicle on Route 43. Three children also were riding in with them. The driver also was cited for failure to yield. Two suspects were taken to the Portage County Jail and one was released on bond.

The children were turned over to Portage County Jobs and Family Services.

Arrested on warrants

Oct. 30 -- Aurora police picked up a Ravenna man at the Bedford police station on an unspecified warrant from Aurora police. He was taken to the Portage County Jail.

Oct. 30 -- Officers picked up an Aurora man at an Akron hospital on an unspecified warrant and took him to the Portage County Jail.

Traffic-related cases

Oct. 29 -- Coyote hit. A Newbury man reported hitting a coyote in the 700 block of North Chillicothe Road. No human injuries were reported.

Nov. 1 -- Rear-end crash. Police cited an Aurora woman for assured clear distance after she struck another Aurora woman from behind at Route 43 and East Boulevard. No injuries were reported.

Nov. 4 -- Lot mishap. Police said an Aurora woman hit a parked car while entering a parking space at Aurora Commons. A witness reported the mishap. The woman who hit the car said she was unaware she did so.

Miscellaneous cases

Oct. 28 -- Harassment. An East Mennonite Road woman reported receiving harassing phone calls at her home from an unknown man.

Oct. 29 -- Arrow found. An East Boulevard woman reported finding an arrow stuck in the ground in her backyard. The arrow was placed into evidence.

Oct. 29 -- Welfare check. Police checked on the welfare of a man on the east side of town and found there was no problem.

Oct. 31 -- Argument. Officers investigated a verbal dispute on Lloyd Avenue. They said it was between a homeowner and some house guests. The latter left and no further police action was necessary.

Oct. 31 -- Wallet lost. A woman reported losing her wallet from her purse. She said it contained $20 in cash and some items.

Oct. 31 -- Syringe found. A man turned in a syringe he found near the intersection of Michigan and Lloyd avenues.

Nov. 1 -- Underage drinking. During a traffic stop for speeding on Aurora-Hudson Road, two Hudson juveniles were cited for underage drinking and a curfew violation, while two others from Hudson were warned about curfew. All four were released to their parents.

Nov. 3 -- Loud music. A Linwood Drive woman was warned for disturbing the peace after a report of loud music at her home.

Officers went to the house and saw her asleep on the couch. When they gained access to the home, they woke her up and she turned off the music and apologized.

Nov. 3 -- Vandalism. A person reported his vehicle was apparently damaged by someone who kicked its side while the vehicle was parked at the high school. No damage estimate was given.
