Aurora -- Resident Matthew Dzurenko, 49, was killed in an early-morning accident July 2 with a wrong-way driver on Interstate 480 in Brooklyn Heights, according to the Brooklyn Heights Police Department.

Parma resident Pete Harhalos, 36, who hit Dzurenko's vehicle head-on, was charged July 6 with aggravated vehicular homicide, a first-degree felony and was to be arraigned in Cuyahoga County Common pleas court July 7.

Brooklyn Heights police said Harhalos was in Cuyahoga County Jail as of June 6. Neither he nor his attorney could be reached for comment by press time.

According to police, the accident occurred about 5 a.m. when Harhalos drove up the westbound exit ramp from I-480, hitting Dzurenko's vehicle head-on.

Brooklyn Heights Police Chief Joseph Kocab said officers helped EMS crews remove Dzurenko from his vehicle. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police said Harhalos was not injured in the crash. Dzurenko's family could not be reached by press time.

According to Dzurenko's obituary from Family Care Services, Dzurenko moved to Aurora two years ago from Columbiana and worked as a sales representative for Unifirst in Cleveland. He leaves behind two sisters and five brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated July 7 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Columbiana, with the Rev. Thomas G. Ziegler officiating. Burial was to follow at Columbiana Cemetery.
