Sports Wire: Wrestling, hockey camps slated; numerous local golfers fare well

Aurora's 2009 intensive wrestling camp is scheduled June 22-25 at 10 a.m., noon, 1 and 3 p.m. at the high school.

Staff will include AHS head coach Dick Bliss, Ken Cardaman and AHS alumni wrestlers Johnny Papesh and Billy Painter, plus other guests.

Workout equipment includes shoes, socks, shorts, towels and a T-shirt. Wrestling headgear and knee pads are optional. A note pad and pencil are suggested.

The tuition is $85 per athlete, and Aurora residents will receive a $10 discount. Checks should be written to Aurora High School Wrestling and sent to Bliss, 109 W. Pioneer Trail, Aurora 44202.

Aurora High School's summer development hockey camp will run June 29 to July 27, and registration deadline is June 20.

Sessions will be offered for mite through high school players, and the field will be limited to 36 players. The camp will be at the Pond on East Washington Street in Auburn Township.

Evening sessions are planned June 29, July 6-7, 13, 20-21 and 27 and early afternoon sessions July 18 and 25.

AHS hockey coaches John Sheridan, Dave Puette, Rick MacDonald and Paul Angus and instructors Ron Altmann and Mark Schwartz will man the camp.

Cost is $100 per player and $50 for a second family members. Sheridan can provide suggestions of local shops and/or online resources for purchasing equipment.

In the Golf Buddy-Mizuno Pro-Am scratch tournament last week at Mayfield Country Club, Barrington Golf Club pro David Engram and local resident Mark Telerico tied for sixth at 4-under-par 67.

Other local results were: Dominic Antenucci and Bill Lavery and Todd Lancaster and Nick Latimer tied for 12th at 68, Gary Trivisonno and Mike Bognar and Bill Reilly and Tom Laubacher tied for 32nd at 70 and Mike Richey and Dan Arison tied for 39th at 71.

In the Northern Ohio PGA's Janice Moodie Pro-Lady tournament at Avon Oaks Country Club, Aurora Golf Club pro Bill Reilly teamed with Kelly Krusoe, Holly James and Lizy Merk to shoot 65-61-126, one stroke behind the winners. Pro Gus Mehallis teamed with Cheryl Carnevale, Bonnie Staley and Cassie Washburn to shoot 64-64-128 for third place.

Qualifying has started for the annual Kenny Novak Memorial Golf Tournament which will be July 28-29 at Walden. Several locals are attempting to qualify.

In a qualifier at Ellsworth Meadows in Hudson, Ariel McNair finished fifth in girls 16-19 with an 88.

David Hinton tied for 22nd and Trey Payden was 30th with 87 and 91, respectively, in boys 16-19, while Andrew Hinton tied for 17th (86), Scott Schroeder took 21st (87) and Austin McNair was 25th (90).

McNair managed to qualify for the Novak on June 11 at Oberlin Country Club with a score of 81.

The field for a Novak qualifier June 18 at Fox Den in Stow is full, and the next qualifier is June 22 at Grantwood in Solon. For details, visit www.nopga.com and click on "junior golf."

McNair is competing this week in the Hudson Junior Invitational tournament at the Country Club of Hudson. The final round is today (June 17).

Aurora resident Lauren Sapochetti, 8, was one of four first-place finishers for the Hudson Explorers Aquatic Team at the CCS Age Group and Open meet June 6-7 in Canton.

She won the 50-meter breaststroke. She also took fifth in the 100 freestyle, ninth in the 50 butterfly and 16th in the 200 intermediate medley.

Competing in the 11-12-year-old division, Aurora resident Adrienne DeAlba placed 22nd in the 50 butterfly, 23rd in the 100 backstroke, 24th in the 50 breaststroke, 27th in the 100 breaststroke, 32th in the 50 backstroke, 34th in the 100 freestyle and 47th in the 50 and 200 freestyle.

HEAT was one of 18 regional swim clubs at the meet. Coaches at the meet were Matt Davis, Katherine Kleinert and Scott Pietrasz.

One of the area's longest-running athletic events enters its 22nd year as the Record-Courier Portage County Open tennis tournament looms July 13-19.

Ranging from novice youth players to tennis teaching professionals, including several from Aurora, 80 to 160 annually enter the tourney at Kent Roosevelt High School's courts.

Tennis players who either live or work in Portage County, and their dependents, are eligible to participate. Signups are due by July 9 at 4 p.m. For details, visit www.kentparksandrec.com.

At the Ohio Teamsters Sports Committee Inc.-Medical Mutual Flag Day race June 10 in Mentor, Aurora resident Sue DeMay took third place in the 50-54 age division in a time of 26:39.

The Aurora Baseball League's summer picnic will be June 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the southern end of Sunny Lake Park.

Food, beverages and entertainment by Marino Brothers DJ Services will be provided.

The league will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks. Those with last names starting with A to M should take snacks and those with last names N to Z should take fresh fruit, cookies and desserts.

Local sports fans are reminded that they can see the Aurora Raptors U12 softball team play the Solon Stars June 27 at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

The game will begin at 11 a.m. prior to the Akron Racers-Philadelphia Force professional softball game. Tickets at $5 each must be ordered three days before the date by calling Chad Calder at 440-724-4544.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has extended its initial three-year contract with Firestone Stadium in Akron to 10 years for the state softball tournament.

The 2009 state tourney, which included four divisions and 12 games, attracted 10,182 fans. For 30 years -- from 1978 to 2007 -- the tourney was at Brookside Park in Ashland.

Three Aurorans competed in the Northeast Ohio Junior Golf Invitational recently at Oak Knolls in Kent and fared well.

Jack Laubacher shot 39-40-79 to finish third in Division I. The winner was August Ward, a Walsh High School student.

Mitchell Johnson shot 42-37-79 to finish thid in Division II. The winner was Tyler O'Brien, also of Walsh. Trey Payden shot 40-43-83 for sixth place.

A number of distance runs are coming up in the next week or so in Northeast Ohio.

The Night Glow 5K will be June 19 at 9:30 p.m. in North Park near Jackson High School in the Belden Village area north of Canton, and the Run for Health 5K will be June 20 at 9 a.m. at Wooster High School. For details, visit www.challengeseries.com.
