by Advocate Staffers For the second year in a row, Barrington Golf Club won the Northern Ohio Golf Association's interclub team championship June 1 at Quail Hollow Country Club. Barrington carded 307 strokes to edge Aurora Golf Club by 4 strokes. Walden did not compete in the 26-team event. Although each team was allowed to have six players, only the top four scores counted. Mark Telerico led Barrington with a 70 and also was medalist in the tournament, followed by Rick Areddy's 74, Jim Mehallis' 81, David Margiotta's and Jim Harless' 82, and David Stanley's 85. For Aurora Golf Club, which fielded only four players, Scott Brubaker shot 74, Joe Stegh 76, Tom Laubacher 79 and Tom Gallagher 82. Medina and Quail Hollow country clubs with 315 totals and Lakewood Country Club with 316 finished out the top five teams. Signature of Solon finished eighth. + + + Quade Rasmussen, 10, is the 2009 national champion of the midget 60-pound weight class at the Columbus Tournament of Champions. The 34 participants in that weight class came from 13 states. Rasmussen participates in the JAWs (Junior Aurora Wrestlers) program. Rasmussen started with 10-0 and 14-0 technical falls, then won by pin in 1:54, took an 8-6 decision and won in the title match by pin in 1:26. + + + Aurora High School graduate Jake Calcei of Mantua became the first Kenyon College baseball player to be named to the "ESPN The Magazine" academic all-America third team. Calcei carried a 3.68 grade-point average and a .410 batting average this spring. He also was selected to the academic all-district first team. During the past season, the senior shortstop led the Lords in hits (73), runs (46), doubles (18), triples (6), stolen bases (23) and slugging percentage (.629). His stats in hits, doubles and triples were Kenyon single-season records. He also set Kenyon career records for at-bats (520), triples (22), runs batted in (121) and total bases (300). He earned the Lords' senior athlete of the year award, was an all-North Coast Athletic Conference first-teamer and earned a spot on the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association all-Mideast regional third team. Calcei's dad, John, is a guidance counselor and assistant football/baseball coach at AHS. + + + Six Aurorans competed in the second annual Race for Green 5K May 30 in Gates Mills. Results were: Kristina Petraitis, sixth in women 25-29 (27:56); Joyce Cieslak, ninth in women 40-44 (32:17), Diane Kelvington, second in women 55-59 (32:12); Harvir Kang, fourth in men 20-24 (28:38); Rod Meeker, sixth in men 40-44 (22:35); and Frank Bitting, seventh in men 45-49 (23:28). + + + The Aurora 10U Green baseball team took second place recently at the Northwest Community Classic. The squad beat Hudson, North Royalton and Green before losing to Copley. Players are Jonathan Blue, Joey Brockway, Jarett Mazanec, Bryce Posner, Sam Roliff, Jaret Rose, Alex Ely, Donovan Boyle, Andrew Pistone, Al Arslanian, Holden Semancik and Alex Hetzel. + + + Barrington Golf Club pro David Engram tied for second place in the Callaway/Pepsi stroke play series 2 tournament June 1. He shot even par 70 and pocketed $850. Aurorans Todd Lancaster and Gary Trivisonno tied for fourth at 71 and won $625 each, Mitch Camp tied for 10th at 72 and won $375 and Mike Richey shot 79. + + + Everest Soccer Club's U18 team, of which Auroran Mark Connell is a member, will represent Ohio North at the U.S. Youth Soccer Midwest Region Championships in June in Sioux Falls, S.D. The club advanced through the qualifying games and semifinal by scoring 17 goals and giving up 2. It will compete against 15 other U18 teams from 13 states. Connell is a 2009 graduate of Aurora High School. He will attend Ohio State University in the fall and plans to play club soccer. He was a four-year starter for the Greenmen. + + + The 9U Aurora Athletics travel baseball squad, which started playing together in April, was undefeated in the Buckeye Baseball League (10-0) at last report. The team also has taken second place in the Hudson and Mentor tournaments. Coaches are John Capretta, Dave Miller, Jeff Fromwiller and Joe Gorman. Players are Zachary Elsawy, Jack Gorman, Joe Capretta, Drew McVay, Jared DeMicco, Gavin Blunt, Trevor Mitch, Cole Miller, Evan Fromwiller, Cade Huffman and Nolan Quinn. The team is sponsored by donations from several local businesses and individuals. + + + Hunters wishing to participate in Ohio's fall controlled deer and waterfowl hunts have until July 31 to submit permit applications for a random drawing. Tallmadge, which had beaten Aurora earlier in the tournament trail, lost in the Division II softball semifinals, while Hudson lost to Elyria in the Division I softball finals. Walsh Jesuit lost to NDCL in the Division II baseball finals. + + + Six people from Aurora participated in the Yates 5K run June 7 in Solon. Results were: Adam Zelwin, second in men 25-19 (18:33.52); April Devincentis, 14th in women 30-34 (32:59.2); L.
