by Advocate Staffers Parents of youngsters interested in playing baseball and softball this year in leagues run by the Aurora Baseball League are reminded of signup dates. Sessions will be Feb. 7 and 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at Harmon School. Online registration closes Feb. 28. The baseball league's directors will meet Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Howard Hanna community room at Barrington Town Square. The ABL will sponsor an umpire clinic for senior, major, minor, little league and softball April 4 at 10 a.m. at Field 11 near Craddock School. Lunch will be provided and a scrimmage will take place at 12:30 p.m. Participants must be at least 12 years old. For details, call John Brockway at 330-995-0285. A player clinic for the coming season has not been scheduled yet. + + + Aurora High School is planning a news conference today (Feb. 4) at 11:30 a.m. when senior Adam Bellamy signs a national letter of intent to play football at Ohio State University. According to coach Bob Mihalik, Bellamy is the first AHS player to receive a full football scholarship since 1983 when Byron Spruell went to Notre Dame. Bellamy received more than 20 scholarship offers, he has earned several first team honors for football, was defensive player of the year for 2008 in the Chagrin Valley Conference and will play in the Ohio-Pennsylvania Big 33 game this summer. + + + Harmon School teacher Chris Flynn and retired Aurora High School teacher Greg Szweda, both of Kent, finished third in the Portage USBC BA handicap doubles tournament at AMF Twin Star Lanes. They posted a score of 931. In other bowling news, Aurora Parks Coordinator Bill Fellenstein posted the top game and series in recent Perrin Asphalt league action at Kent Lanes. His scores were 268 and 675. + + + Hiram College's men's basketball tem, coached by Aurora resident Steve Fleming, won its fifth straight game Jan. 31 over Wittenberg, 79-75. The Terriers are 14-5 overall and 9-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. + + + Children in pre-kindergarten to second grade can participate in recreation indoor soccer from Feb. 21 to March 28. Fee is $30 for Aurora residents and $40 for non-residents. Sessions will be at Harmon School. The race will begin at 6 p.m., with registration starting at 5 at Advanced Rehab, 4707 Mill St. Cost is $15 in advance and $20 the day of the race. + + + Kent State University's men's basketball team (10-11 overall, 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference) got back on the winning track with a 68-46 victory over East Michigan and 65-47 win over Western Michigan. Against EM, Al Fisher tallied 17 points, Tyree Evans had 15 and Jordan Mincy had 13. Against WM, Chris Singletary and Evans each had 13 points and Fisher added 12. Meanwhile, KSU's women (15-4 overall, 4-3 MAC) beat Eastern Michigan 84-52. Anna Kowalska had 19 points, Chenel Harris 14, Yoshica Spears 12, Asheley Harkins 11 and Jamilah Humes and Rachel Bennett 10 each. KSU's men will play at Ball State on Feb. 7 and at Northern Illinois on Feb. 10. The women play at Central Michigan tonight (Feb. 4), host Northern Illinois on Feb. 7 and travel to Ball State on Feb. 11. + + + Aurora High School graduate John Trew scored 10 points and had 2 rebounds for Ohio Dominican College in a 64-61 victory over Wilberforce on Jan. 31. + + + The Bedford Recreation Department is seeking teams for two adult softball leagues this summer. There will be a Friday night coed doubleheader league starting April 17 and a men's summer Monday and Wednesday league starting April 20. Mandatory managers' meetings will be April 8 at 7:30 p.m. for the men's league and at 8:30 p.m.. for the coed league, both in Room 3 of Ellenwood Center.
