Aurora -- The city's planning-zoning-building department is finally getting computer software to link files from what once were two separate departments.

Two years ago, the building department merged with the planning-zoning department, with Rich Wehrenberg named director.

Since that time, Wehrenberg said the staff has been working on getting each department on the same computer system.

The purchase of software to make that possible was approved Dec. 1 by City Council. The amount is $17,925, with Geo Decisions getting the contract.

Wehrenberg said the building department has been on Geo's system since 2000 and all building information for any address in the city is in there.

However, the planning-zoning department basically has been working with nothing but paper files, according to Wehrenberg.

"The Geo proposal includes a complete upgrade of software we have been utilizing for the past eight years, adding in planning and zoning components which will enable us to include that information in our database," Wehrenberg told Council.

"We'll be able to look up not only all the building history, but planning and zoning requirements for any parcel."

According to Wehrenberg, the software will allow the BPZ department to tie in to GIS information, allowing the department to not only find all the information on a piece or property, but provide an aerial view of the land.

"At this point it will enable our staff to quickly look up information without using paper files, which planning does now," he said.

Wehrenberg added in the future the software will make all the information available on the Internet.

Ward 1 Councilman Jim Vaca asked if the system would include older homes or just new developments.

Wehrenberg said it would include everything from 2000 forward and most properties dating back into the 1980s.

However, he added records prior to the mid '80s weren't kept efficiently and it would be hard to have information for that period.
