LWV-NORTHERN PORTAGE Members of the League of Women Voters of Northern Portage County are planning a trip to the First Ladies National Historic Site in Canton, with departure from Aurora scheduled May 3 at 9 a.m. The tour includes the restored Ida Saxton McKinley House and the National First Ladies Library Education and Research Center. Admission is $7 per person, but $6 for those 62 and older. Lunch will be at the Stables Restaurant after the tour. Those interested should call Jean Hogan at 330-562-8920 as soon as possible. Carpooling is planned. The Northern Portage LWV will have its annual meeting and luncheon June 7 at noon at the Aurora Club. Mental health issues will be discussed. Members planning to attend should call President Doreene McDonald at 330-562-8241. HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Aurora Historical Society will have a dinner meeting May 15 at the Aurora Club. Cassie Chadwick will speak on "Women in History." The society's summer picnic will be July 13 at the Aurora Club. The society's and Rotary Club of Aurora's annual antiques show and sale will be June 28 and 29 at Leighton School. Admission will be $5. Show managers are Jan and Dick Wilks. Proceeds will go toward local scholarships. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The first Aurora Chamber of Commerce Night at the Aurora Community Theatre will be May 16. A complimentary wine and cheese reception will begin at 7 and "Cabaret" will be performed at 8. Cost is $12 per person, a $3 discount from the regular price. Payment must be received in the Chamber's office by May 8. Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Reservations are preferred by today (April 30). TRAILBLAZERS 4-H One of Portage County's newest 4-H clubs -- the Trailblazers -- recently began operating in the Aurora area. It has elected officers and begun planning activities. Gabe Molnar is president, Sam Connell vice president, Emily Gajewski treasurer and Brynn Hirschman secretary. Advisers are Robert Lamont, small animals; Carol Malz, non-animals; Kathy Kobyljanec, key leader; and Judy Zidones and Krystal McDowell, horses. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS Eugene and Betty Novak of Aurora are great-grandparents of Seth Robert Runewicz, who was born April 4 at Robinson Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and has a sister, Allie Runewicz, 3. Parents are Rob and Nicole Runewicz of Mantua. Grandparents are Garrettsville residents Nancy and Mick Custer and Pauline Hanzel. Great-grandmother is Noreen Custer of Garrettsville. BOY SCOUT HONOREES A handful of adult Boy Scout leaders from Aurora were among those honored at the annual Seneca Disrict volunteer recgonition program and dinner at the United Church of Chris in Kent. Executive Director for the District Elliot Bennett honored Brian Pichola of Troop 265 as committee chairman of the year. Pichola will be among three area volunteers honored at the Great Trail Council's recognition program May 12 at the Tangier in Akron. Greg Smith presented this year's Arrowhead Award to Scoutmaster Dennis Bradley of Aurora. The award was created by the Seneca District to recognize outstanding Scoutmasters. The district Award of Merit went to Scoutmaster Bruce Andrews of Troop 265. Greg and Leslee Smith and Beth Meyer earned trainer certificates. Scoutmaster Mark Bergman encouraged volunteers to urge greater participation in this year's High Tide of the Seneca District Gettysburg Camporee Oct. 16 to 19. Scouts will camp in the same area as the Union soldiers did in 1865. Also planned are hiking trips along the Billy Yank, Johnny Reb and historic Gettysburg trails, and visits to the Eisenhower Farm and Visitors Center. PWP DANCE PLANNED Portage County Chapter 600 of the International Parents Without Partners will have its monthly dance May 3 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Kent VFW Post 3703. Music is provided by disc jockey Mel. The Cinco de Mayo dance is open to all. The group is a single parent support group for those who are divorced, have suffered the death of a spouse or have never been married.
