Co-op Preschool sets

special event on May 1

Aurora Cooperative Preschool will offer an early childhood educational event for prekindergartners and their families May 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

The event will be a kaleidoscope of activities and games facilitated by early childhood specialists and professionals from the community and several area school districts.

Activities will focus on skills of value to children in preparation for kindergarten. Stations will be set up so students can participate in developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

Ellis earns 2nd place

in PBS's story contest

A Craddock School first-grader is one of winners in PBS Channels 45-49's annual Reading Rainbow young writers and illustrators contest.

Taking second place in the first-grade competition was Ethan Ellis, son of Randy and Ann Ellis. His story was "The Adventures of George and Wolfie."

Second-place winners received art sets, plus Reading Rainbow backpacks and DVDs. Ellis' story, with the others, can be read on the PBS channels 45-49 Web site after April 18.

The Reading Rainbow contest encouraged children in kindergarten to grade 3 to submit original stories and illustrations. Entries were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration to text and illustrations.

More than 400 children submitted stories. Reading Rainbow, hosted by actor LeVar Burton, is a television series that encourages children ages 5 to 10 to read.

Pediatrician to talk to

early childhood group

The Solon Early Childhood PTA will host pediatrician Dr. Victor C. Strasburger, who will talk about "The Effects of Media on Our Children."

He will appear April 22 at 7 p.m. at Stratford Commons, 7000 Cochran Road, Solon. The program is free, open to the public and no registration is required.

Strasburger is chief of the division of adolescent medicine, professor of pediatrics and professor of family and community medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

In 2000, Strasburger was honored by the American Academy of Pediatrics with the Adele Delenbaugh Hofmann Award for outstanding lifetime achievement in adolescent medicine.

The Solan Early Childhood PTA is made up of more than 400 families from the Aurora, Solon, Twinsburg and Chagrin Valley area who have children under age 5.

Two are nominated for

two military academies

U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette has announced that two Aurora students have been nominated to military service academies.

Aubrey Boswell, a student at Aurora High School, was nominated for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, while Nicholas Gertz, a Crestwood High School student, was nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy.

"The competition for these nominations is fierce, and these young Ohioans can take pride in the fact they are among the country's best and brightest," LaTourette said.

"They should be commended for their desire to serve our country."

LaTourette said his office is accepting applications for the Class of 2009 and interested students should call his district office at 1-800-447-0529.

Prom donations sought

The Aurora High School after-prom committee is still seeking monetary donations and prizes for the event May 11. Anyone wishing to donate should call Karen Wentz at 330-562-8382 or send the donation to 138 Eldridge Road, Aurora 44202.

Item orders extended

Because of a high demand for Greenmen shorts and zip-up hoodies, the Junior Achievement business class' has extended the deadline for orders until April 22.

Order forms are available in Heidi Stroy's room at the high school or in the office. Hoodies cost $25 and shorts are $17. Both items can be purchased for $35.

Students win drawing

Aurora High School students Ron Adams, Zach Serafin, John Kovalik and Mike Plevich were last week's winners of the Pride Card drawing.

Pharmacy camp set

The Ursuline College-University of Toledo Pharmacy Partnership will host its first pharmacy camp this summer.

Juniors who are considering a career in pharmacy can participate in the June 15-17 camp at Ursuline. Cost is $125.

Financial assistance and transportation are available for students who quality. Aurora High School students who are interested should see Charlotte Ward in the guidance office.

Kirksey stepping down

as spokesman at KSU

Ron Kirksey, executive direcotr of communications and marketing at Kent State University, will retire April 30.

Vice President for University Relations Kathy Stafford made the announcement last week.

"Ron has earned a special occasion to mark his retirement," she said, noting a retirement reception for the university community will be April 30 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 306 of the Student Center.

A KSU spokesman for the past 10 years, Kirksey was a U.S. Army journalist during the Vietnam War, and earned a bachelor's degree in political science-international affairs from the University of Tennesee and a master's degree in journalism from KSU.

As a reporter for the Akron Beacon Journal, he was the lead writer for a year-long study on race relations in 1993-94 that earned a Pulitzer Prize.

Flower sale orders due

Orders for the Harmon-High School PTO's annual flower sale are due by April 25. Presale pickup and limited open sale will be May 9 from 2 to 7 p.m. near Malley's Chocolates at Aurora Farms Premium Outlets.

Fashion show at KSU

Kent State University senior fashion design students will showcase their final portfolio April 24-26 at the Shannon Rodgers/Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising Auditorium on campus.

A show open to the general public will be April 26 at 8 p.m. The cost to attend is $65. Tickets are available at the Fashion School and KSU Student Center, and by phone at 330-672-0194.

All proceeds go to the Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.
