Artistic talents are paying off for several Aurora High School students. Art teacher John Smolko reports that 10 students have been awarded more than $616,000 in scholarships from a number of colleges and art schools. "This is an exceptional group of artists and they have worked hard all school year developing their exemplary portfolios," he said. Katy Filarski has been offered $56,000 from the Cleveland Institute of Art, $52,000 from Pratt and $10,000 from Pratt MWP. Danielle Law was awarded $48,000 from the Cleveland Institute of Art, $40,000 from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and $38,000 from the Columbus College of Art and Design. Michael Cimoroni re-ceived a $44,000 scholarships from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, $36,000 from the Cleveland Institute of Art and $30,000 from the Columbus College of Art and Design. The Cleveland Institute of Art also offered Alyssa Hungerman and Elizabeth Bermea $48,000 scholarships. Bermea had an additional $10,000 from Pratt MWP. Monica Cronin earned a $56,000 scholarships from the Cleveland Institute of Art and $1,000 for her governor's show entry. Mercyhurst College awarded Ariana Lindenfelser a $24,000 scholarship and Elmhurst College offered Danielle Dobies a $4,000 award for her portfolio. Alyssa Johnson and Sara Mirolli has received $36,000 scholarships from the Columbus College of Art and Design and Miami University, respectively. Governor's Art Show In the first round of judging at the 2008 Ohio Governor's Art Show, 18 AHS students received regional honors. They are Annelie Frantzen, Law, Briana Johnson-Sims, Johnson, Danielle Lewandowski, Hungerman, Kimberly Kovach, Lindenfelser, Jessica Buse, Cronin, Jessica Masch, Whitney Lowdermilk, Joe Lawrie, Dobies, Filarski, Mirolli, Bridget Filarski and Emma Kropp. The students received a certificate of recognition, and their works of art were sent down to Columbus for final judging. Six students had nine pieces selected for the governor's show exhibition, which are on display at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, the governor's office and the Ohio Department of Education until May 15. Three hundred works were selected from more than 12,000 entered statewide. Dobies had three pieces selected, Kropp two and Cronin, Mirolli, Frantzen nd Buse all one each. The awards ceremony took place April 13 in the Capitol Theater at the Riffe Center in Columbus.
