Sports Wire: Trew is special mention; several tackle tower

Aurora High School senior John Trew Jr. was named special mention all-Ohio in Division II boys basketball for the 2007-08 season.

Trew led the Greenmen to a 14-7 record. He averaged more than 16 points and 8 rebounds a game, and was named a first-teamer in Ohio's Inland Lakes district.

A number of Aurorans participated in the annual Tackle the Tower stairclimbing event Feb. 9 at the Erieview Tower in Cleveland.

Jane Springer placed second in the women's 55-59 class in 7:53.9. Julie Krebs was 17th in women's 35-39 in 8:41.8 and Paula Miroewski was 20th in the same age group in 9:08.3.

Other local results were: Women's 25-29 -- Allison Adams, 63rd in 11:01; men 20-24 -- Kyle Mitchell, 21st in 11:18.2; men 35-39 -- Michael Miroewski, 20th in 7:03.8; Matt Burke, 27th in 7:33.1; and Brady Krebs, 31st in 7:47.2; men 45-49 -- Brian McKinney, 33rd in 10:27.7; and Stephen Veres, 37th in 11:19.1.

Western Reserve Racquet and Fitness Club is hosting Rally for the Cure, a tennis fundraising event, April 11 from noon to 2 p.m.

Entry fee is $40 and includes a light lunch, tennis round robin, tips from the professional staff and prizes. Registration is required by April 4.

Tennis players of all levels, including non-club members, are welcome to attend. Funds raised will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Swim for Diabetes will be conducted April 4 to 6 at 70-plus pools in Northeast Ohio.

All of the proceeds raised from the event stay in Northeast Ohio and support diabetes risk assessments and education programs, fund local diabetes research and support Camp Ho Mita Koda for children with diabetes.

The closest participating pools to Aurora are in Solon, Hiram, Kent, Twinsburg, Macedonia and Chagrin Falls.

Perry High School boys basketball coach Chad Frazier was picked by the Associated Press as one of three co-coaches of the year in Ohio for Division III.

Perry posted a 20-4 record, won the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division crown with a 10-0 mark and advanced to the regional semifinals.

Kent State University's Jim Christian has been voted the Mid-American Conference coach of the year for the second time in the last three seasons by the league's news media association.

"This is a team award and a true testament to the amount of work and dedication both our players and coaching staff have put into the program," he said. He also was coach of the year in 2006.

Christian led the Golden Flashes to a school record 25 regular season wins and the overall MAC regular season title. In six seasons, he has compiled the top winning percentage in league history (.703, 135-57).

Meanwhile, junior guard Al Fisher was named 2007-08 MAC player of the year. He was the second KSU player -- DeAndre Haynes won in 2006 -- to capture the award.

Fisher led KSU with a 14.3-point average and 4.2 assists per game. He won MAC East player of the week honors four times this season, and averaged 16.3 points in MAC games.

KSU's Haminn Quaintance was the defensive payer of the year, while Mike Scott and Quaintance were named to the conference's second team and Chris Singletary honorable mention.

Kent State University's women's basketball team topped Northern Illinois 75-67 in the opening round of the MAC tournament at the Q Arena in Cleveland.

Eight players scored for KSU, led by Chenel Harris' 15 points, Asheley Harkins' 13 and Stephanie Gibson's and Rachel Bennett's 12 each.

KSU then lost to Bowling Green 85-57 in the second round to finish the season 9-21. Ellie Shields had 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while Chenel Harris had 13 points and Anna Kowalsha 10.

The Hudson interscholastic equestrian team's high school riders, led by coaches Lee Cosma and Auroran Kim Segedy, competed recently in Coolville.

Hudson took first place at the 12-team event. Based out of the Hudson Equestrian Center, it includes participants from sixth to 12th grades, led in jumping and equitation.

The Northern Ohio PGA's spring meeting will be April 7 and 8 at Elyria Country Club. Online registration will be available soon at www.northernohio.pga.com.

The NOPGA's tournament schedule for 2008 begins April 14 with a pro-pro event at the Quarry Golf Club near Canton. Barrington in Aurora will host the Stroke Play Series 7 tournament July 7.

The Ohio Senior Open will be May 14 and 15 at Firestone Country Club, and the Ohio Open will be July 21 to 23 at Quail Hollow Country Club in Concord Township.

This winter, Quail Hollow unveiled its new 20,000-square-foot, $8 million clubhouse, which was funded by the club's principal owner ClubCorp USA.

The 85th Ohio Open is open to all golfers who have been Ohio residents for at least 120 days prior to the championship, or any NOPGA member in good standing and employed no less than 120 days at a recognized golf facility.

The Northern Ohio Golf Association's first tourney of 2008 is a four-ball championship May 5 at Firestone.

The Akron District Golf Association's first tourney of the year will be a two-man better ball event May 3 at Turkeyfoot Lake.

The second annual Cleveland Cornhole Championship will be April 12 at the Sports Dome in Valley View.

There will be pro and recreational divisions. Entry fees are $150 for two players in the pro division and $60 for two players in the recreational division.

In the Ohio high school boys state basketball tournament, no Cleveland area schools claimed titles.

The crowns went to Newark, which defeated St. Edward in Division I; Chillicothe in Division II; Ottawa-Glandorf in Division III; and New Knoxville in Division IV.

St. Edward defeated Cincinnati St. Xavier in the semifinals. Villa Angela St. Joseph, the only other Cleveland area school in the state tourney, was beaten by Sugarcreek Garaway in the Division III semifinals.

Grantwood Women's Golf Association is seeking members, who must have a USGA handicap index of 45.0 or below.

Registration forms can be found on the bulletin board in the Grantwood Recreation Center's atrium at the golf course at Route 43 and Pettibone Road.

Aurora High School graduate Emily C. Bunka is a member of the Ohio Northern University women's tennis team.
Bunka is a freshman majoring in business administration and is the daughter of John and Catherine Bunka of Forestview Place.
The Polar Bears completed a recent spring break trip with a 3-2 record and are 8-3 overall this season.
They open the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference season today (March 19) against Kenyon. Their first home match is March 26 against Capital.
Last year, ONU posted a 22-7 record and finished second in the OAC at 8-1. The team is guided by seventh-year head coach Scott Wills.

At the Capital University Rick Meindl Last Call track meet Feb. 22 in Columbus, Aurora High School graduate Chris Dennison took second place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:37.05.
He finished behind teammate Paul Krebs (15:29.42).
The Redhawks will run in the Southern Ohio Cup on March 29 at Oxford, then will participate in the Cincinnati Invitational on April 5 and the Miami Invitational on April 12.

AHS graduate Jimmy Eavenson traveled with the Mount Union men's tennis team to Hilton Head, S.C., for spring matches. Against Defiance, he beat a foe 10-4 at fifth singles.
