FRED J. BARNOFF

Former local fire chief

A memorial service will take place Feb. 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Kindrich-McHugh-Steinbauer Funeral Home on Bainbridge Road in Solon for Fred J. Barnoff Jr., 67, who died Feb. 12 in Phoenix, Ariz.

A native Ohioan, he was the longtime fire chief for the city of Aurora. After his retirement from more than 30 years of fire department service, he retired and enjoyed boating on Lake Erie.

Survivors include his wife Jan; son Fred III (Michelle) of Uniontown; daughter Melanie (Ben) Whiting of Lakewood; two grandchildren; mother Sara; sister Sally (Rich) Backos; brother David (Diane); and his faithful dog Crew.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Julie, father Fred Sr. and sister Joyce Sedlak.

Visiting hours at the funeral home will start Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Aurora Fireman's Association.

VERA M. BARAN

Auroran 50-plus years

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Feb. 16 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Aurora for Vera M. Baran, 85, of Aurora, who died from natural causes Feb. 13 at Robinson Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 1, 1922, in Canyon City, Colo. She married her late husband Andrew on April 23, 1944. He died Jan. 31, 1988. She has been an Aurora resident for more than 50 years, and reared her five children here.

Survivors include sons Richard (Mary), James J. (Carol) and Thomas A. (Kathy); daughters Patricia M. and Christine M. (Jay) Mrugacz; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister Sonia Merz.

Interment was in Aurora Cemetery. Kindrich-McHugh-Steinbauer Funeral Home in Solon handled arrangements.

JANE F. KROPP

Mantua area teacher

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Feb. 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua for Jane F. Kropp, 91, of Mantua, who died Feb. 14 at her residence.

Born March 26, 1916 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Zillah M. (Ulery) Hettinger. She was a 1938 graduate of Case Western University in Cleveland.

She worked as a secretary at the Standard Oil Co., where she met her husband Einar P. Kropp. They moved to the Mantua area in 1946.

In 1954, Mrs. Kropp began teaching kindergarten in the Mantua schools, then taught second grade at St. Joseph's School until her retirement.

A longtime member of St. Joseph's Church, she was active in numerous church groups, and was the starting force in establishing the St. Joseph's School library.

Mrs. Kropp was active in the Grange and Farm Bureau Council for many years and enjoyed reading and gardening.

Survivors include her husband; sons Peter K. (Catherine) Kropp of North Lawrence and John M. (Carol) Kropp of Aurora; daughters Mary Ann (Carter) Zane of Auburn Township, Elin S. (David) Poneman of Larchmont, N.Y. and Jeanne E. Kropp of East Lansing, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Green Funeral Home in Mantua handled arrangements. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua.

TIMOTHY W. STURGES

1975 Aurora High grad

Services were Feb. 15 at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls for Timothy Watt Struges, 50, who died suddenly Feb. 12.

He was a 1975 Aurora High School graduate and graduated from the Art Institute in Pittsburgh. A resident of Streetsboro, he was employed by Etched Metal Co. in Solon, and was an avid Browns fan and artist.

Survivors include his parents Mary Jane and Doug Sturges; brothers Doug (Sue) and Dean (Anne); sister Sandy (Jay) Schach; and seven nephews and nieces.

Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.

EDWARD J. HACH

Was retired policeman

Services for Edward J. Hach, 81, of Aurora will be Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Aurora.

Calling hours will be Feb. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Romito Funeral Home on Darrow Road in Twinsburg.

Mr. Hach died Feb. 15 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.

He was employed by the city of Cleveland Heights as a police officer for 30 years, was a member of OLPH Church, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and coached youth baseball in Aurora and Solon.

Survivors include his wife Dolores J. (Hlavin) Hach; sons Greg (Chris), Dave (Beverly) and Jeff (Mary); four grandchildren; one great-grandchild is on the way in March; and sister Marian (Harry-deceased) Sawczen.

He was a special father and grandfather to John and Connie Klein and their sons Steven and Douglas.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Mary (Pejsa) Hach, brother John (Jean) Hach and sister Gloria (Steve) Sonchik.

Interment will be in Aurora Cemetery.

GEORGE L. KOUBEK

Was products engineer

Services were Feb. 3 at Ferfolia Funeral Home in Sagamore Hills for George L. Koubek, 84, of Aurora, who died Feb. 1 at Hillcrest Hospital.

Born Nov. 23, 1923 in Cleveland, he was an electrical projects engineer and served in the U.S. Army.

Preceded in death by his parents James and Mary Pokorny, his survivors include his wife Veronica (Lukach); sons Michael (Maureen), Bob, Donald (Dee), Kenneth (Kathy), Mark and Gary; daughter Karen (Angelo) Carcioppolo; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister Mary Ann (Joe) Lukach.

Burial was in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

EDWIN MAULIS SR.

Was volunteer firefighter

Edwin Maulis Sr., 89, of Twinsburg, died Feb. 14, 2008, at the Cleveland Clinic. He was a Twinsburg resident since 1933.

He drove a school bus for 25 years, was a self-employed house painter and a member of the volunteer fire department.

He also was an artist who painted many pictures that could be seen around Twinsburg.

Mr. Maulis was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn (Spice) and brother Emil Maulis. He is survived by his daughter, Lorelei Schmidjell of Reynoldsville; sons Edwin (Terryl) Maulis Jr. of Twinsburg and James (Marian) Maulis of Aurora; 13 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Private family services were conducted at Johnson-Romito Funeral Home in Twinsburg. Entombment was at Crown Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.

DR. LEWIS F. BISSELL

Service will be Feb. 23

A memorial service for Dr. Lewis Frederick Bissell, a former physician in Aurora, will be Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Unitarian-Universalist Church at 228 Gougler Ave., Kent. Dr. Bissell died Dec. 23 in South Carolina, where he resided. A service took place there previously.
