Three Aurora Council reps file for re-election so far

AURORA -- With the filing deadline for the 2017 mayoral and City Council elections about six weeks away, three people have so far filed for positions, according to the Portage County Board of Elections.

The three who have filed so far are all Council incumbents -- Amy McDougall for an at-large seat, Reva Barner in Ward 3 and Kathi Grandillo in Ward 5.

The other seat that is up for grabs in the fall is Ward 1, the area that Jim Vaca has represented for many years.

Nobody has filed for mayor, the position that Ann Womer Benjamin took over in January 2014. Aurora's non-partisan election will take place Nov. 7.

In 2013, when she polled about 34 percent of the votes, Womer Benjamin was opposed by John Kudley, Mark Demyan, Tom Plunkett, John Monroe and Delbert Dunbar.

Nobody has filed for the three Board of Education seats which are open. They are currently held by Gerald Kohanski, Pam Mehallis and Beverly Kuch.

Council seats not up for election this year are those of at-large reps John Kudley and Scott Wolf, and ward reps Dennnis Kovach (2), George Horvat (4) and Harold Hatridge (6). Those seats and the School Board seats of Zena Elliott and Anne Grohe are not up election for two more years.

The terms of office for all of the local positions is four years. The deadline to file for Board of Education seats is Aug. 3 at 4 p.m., while the city positions deadline is Aug. 17 at 4 p.m.

Persons running must be registered voters of the city and at least 18 years old on the date of the election. They must obtain petitions and turn in a designated number of valid signatures of other registered voters of the city. A filing fee is required.
