AURORA -- With Northeast Ohio in the middle of winter, building projects in Aurora were few and far between in January.
The planning-zoning-building department reported that permits for projects valued at $329,500 were issued last month.
Residential projects amounted to $236,500. There was one commercial project -- a concrete pad and cooler at Papous Tap & Grille -- worth $8,000, and one industrial project -- upgrades to bathrooms at PartsSource on Lena Drive -- valued at $85,000.
Residential projects included nine alterations and one deck.
Licenses issued included 115 for general work, 31 for electrical, 22 for heating-air conditioning and 17 for plumbing for a total of 185.
Building department revenue totaled $31,747, including $9,374 for building permits, $18,500 for licenses, $124 in state fees, $50 for miscellaneous, $3,700 from completion deposits and nothing from topography deposits.
City staffers made 333 residential and 47 commercial-industrial inspections in January.
Meanwhile, Fire Chief David Barnes reported that his crews responded to 36 fire alarms and 144 rescue calls in January and made 19 fire prevention inspections. Fire loss amounted to $99,000.
Falls were the top reason for rescue calls (21 responses), followed by sudden illness (14), breathing problems (13), fainting and unconsciousness (12), weakness and dizziness (11) and chest pain (10).
Crews made 63 trips to Cleveland Clinic-Twinsburg, 17 to Ahuja Medical Center, nine each to Hillcrest Hospital and UH-Twinsburg, eight to UH-Portage Medical Center and two to Bedford Hospital.
During fire prevention inspections, hazards found included exit signs not illuminated or exit sign backup power not functional, emergency lighting not functional, aisles blocked, electrical covers damaged, too many extension cords in a socket and misuse of power strips.
Seventeen correction notices were handed out.
Police Chief Brian Byard reported that 25 Part I offenses -- the most serious -- occurred in January, including 22 thefts, two assaults and one burglary.
Other offenses included fraud-identity theft (nine incidents), domestic violence disputes (four), drug overdoses (two) and one each vandalism-criminal mischief, domestic violence physical and suicide attempt or threat.
Officers filed 111 reports, handled 222 traffic-related tasks and 164 criminal-type calls and performed 1,412 service-related activities. Total calls handled by officers were 1,798.
Seven adults were charged with theft, eight for receiving stolen property, one each for vandalism-criminal mischief and drug abuse and five for other criminal activity, while police issued seven warrants.
Officers investigated 14 traffic accidents, three of which involved injuries, cited 25 people for traffic violations, gave parking tickets to five people and made 150 traffic stops.
Two juveniles were determined to be unruly, with both referred to Portage County Juvenile Court. No juveniles were cited for traffic offenses.
The service department reported that 485 tons of trash and 133 tons of recyclables were picked up in January, a ratio of 78 percent to 22 percent.
Cemetery receipts amounted to $2,104, including $1,189 for sales of lots, $518 for vault interments and $397 for perpetual care.
Revenue from water and sewer permits were only $5,292, all of which came from commercial establishments.
