Cleveland area business owner Greg McNeil has launched Cover2 Resources, a nonprofit organization to help fight the opioid epidemic which is gripping Northeast Ohio.
The Cover2 Resources team is hosting its official kickoff event Oct. 15 at The Overlook Grill, 1519 Overlook Road in Twin Lakes.
Cover2 Resources has produced an ongoing podcast series to educate the public on the opioid epidemic and to help break the stigma surrounding talking about addiction.
The fundraiser will include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction, with all proceeds going to Cover2 Resources to support its opioid education initiatives. Buy tickets at cover2.org/kickoff.
McNeil lost his son Sam to a heroin overdose on Oct. 23, 2015.
"As a parent, I was confident that we had it covered. We thought we were doing all the right things to help Sam is his recovery from opioid dependence," McNeil said.
"But we learned we did not have it covered at all. We realized we weren't equipped with the tools we needed to help Sam succeed. Since his passing, it's become evident that many families face the same desperate situation today."
Through initiatives slated for this year, including a podcast series on people, places and things making a difference in the opioid epidemic, Cover2 Resources hopes to make a difference in the growing opioid addiction problem.
Currently there are 28 episodes, available at cover2.org/podcasts, that feature interviews with experts such as Judge David T. Matia of the Cuyahoga County Drug Court; Denny Wilson, a recovering addict and Founder of FI Community Housing; and State Rep. Robert Sprague (R-83).
