Aurora -- With a volunteer corps of 839, Christ Community Chapel of Aurora exceeded its goal for the number of meals it wanted to pack Aug. 27.

Nicole Coy, event coordinator for the Feed My Starving Children program this year, said the chapel managed to pack 163,296 meals during the day. The goal was 147,000 meals.

In a few weeks, volunteers will learn where Feed My Starving Children is sending the food packed in Aurora. The organization works to provide meals for hungry children in 70 countries.

The non-profit agency devotes 90 cents of every dollar donated directly to feed children, and it sends volunteer-packed, nutritious meals to orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs "to break the cycle of poverty," according to a recent release from the organization.

The meals include a dehydrated protein, a rice or grain and a dehydrated vegetable.

"It was great," she said. "It was wonderful. We had a great turnout. We ended up packing more meals than we originally planned."

Coy said the two-hour shift starting at 2:30 p.m. ended up being the busiest of the day, which was a slot that was short on volunteers a couple of weeks before the event.

"It actually ended up going a lot smoother and quicker than anticipated," she said.°

A last-minute social media and publicity push, including articles published in area newspapers, helped, she said.°

"I think that a lot of it came from word of mouth," she said. "There were a few more walk-ins than expected."

Coy said she wished she'd gotten a little earlier start.°

"In the planning process, I wish I had started out sooner or reached out a little earlier to particular groups of people," she explained.

She also said the chapel may try to time the event next year for a date when school is in session, since it might be a good place to find volunteers.

Two years ago, Christ Community Chapel of Hudson took on the Feed My Starving Children project. That effort, along with the recent one, also included CCC campuses in Stow and the Highland Square area of Akron.
