Aurora building projects valued at $521,787 in July

Aurora -- The value of building projects for which city permits were issued in July was $521,787, according to the city's planning-zoning-building department monthly report.

A permit was issued for only one commercial project -- interior alterations at Mason Jar Grill at 329 E. Garfield Road, worth $15,000.

Industrial projects were valued at $201,400 and included interior alterations at Natural Essentials on Lena Drive and a cell tower diesel generator at 65 W. Pioneer Trail.

Residential projects were worth $305,387 and included seven decks, three additions, two each alterations and in-ground pools and one each utility building and above-ground pool.

Licenses issued included 30 for general work, eight for electrical and one for plumbing.

Building department revenue included $10,144 from permits, $3,900 from licenses, $350 for miscellaneous, $123 in state fees and $4,000 from completion deposits for a total of $18,517.

Interim Police Chief Rob Hagquist reported 26 Part I -- the most serious -- crimes occurred in July, including 22 thefts, three burglaries and one assault.

Other incidents included disorderly conduct (37), vandalism-criminal mischief (15), fraud-identity theft (10), domestic violence (six), missing persons (two) and runaway juvenile (one).

Officers handled 87 traffic-related duties and 160 criminal type calls and performed 1,391 service-related activities. Dispatchers handled 2,311 tasks.

Sixty-seven adults were charged with various offenses, and 119 adults were cited for traffic or parking violations. Officers made 534 traffic stops. Driving under suspension led the list of offenses with eight citations, while 33 parking citations were issued.

TWO JUVENILES were determined to be unruly, while six were cited for traffic violations, with all eight cases handled in Portage County Juvenile Court.

Police personnel drove city vehicles 19,666 miles during the month, bringing the total for the first seven months of the 2014 to 126,938, compared to 131,025 last year.

Fire Chief David Barnes reported that his crews responded to 33 fire alarms and 147 rescue calls, and made 11 fire prevention inspections in July. Fire loss was estimated at $3,050, bringing the total for the first eight months of 2014 to $24,670, compared to $242,060 last year.

Accidental injuries were the primary reason of rescue calls -- 23 -- followed by falls and sudden illness (18 each), lift assists (12) and breathing difficulties and chest pain (10 each).

Crews made 64 trips to Cleveland Clinic-Twinsburg, 14 to Hillcrest Hospital, 12 to Ahuja Medical, nine to Robinson Memorial, three to UH-Twinsburg and one to Marymount. Forty-four calls required no transport.

During fire prevention inspections, hazards found included fire extinguisher access obstructed, exit signs not illuminated, emergency lighting not functional, exit signs backup power not functional and exit aisles blocked.

Personnel had two drill nights, attended five schools/meetings outside of Aurora, made three school visits and taught one CPR class.

The service department reports that cemetery receipts totaled $2,462 in July, including $2,280 for vault interments, $82 for foundations, $75 from sales of lots and $25 for perpetual care.

Meanwhile, contractors collected 567 tons of trash and 125 tons of recyclables in July, an 82 percent to 18 percent ratio. The tonnage was most for a single month so far in 2014.

Water and sewer permits brought in $449 in July, including $411 from the Villas of Bertram and $38 from the Walden Co.
