Upgrades could be done in spring at Sunny Lake Park in Aurora

Aurora -- Improvements to Sunny Lake Park could be completed in the spring.

"Sunny Lake is a true gem in Aurora and is a well-used, much-enjoyed park year-round," Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said.

Improvements were approved at $325,000 in this year's budget -- to be used for new restrooms and an expanded parking lot at the boathouse and a restroom / concessions building at the ballfields across East Mennonite Road.

The project was recently bid and the best and most responsive bid was for $398,000 by Hummel Construction Co. of Ravenna. Other bids, which were not accepted, were for $425,000 and about $432,000

A Council ordinance seeks to accept the bid and had its first reading Aug. 11 after being sent from Council's committee of the whole. The additional funding is available from parks and land improvement funds.

Originally, the project was presented at more than $700,000, and Womer Benjamin pared it down significantly during budget talks.

"The boathouse restrooms need to be improved without building a whole new structure, and the parking lot will be made safer with better ingress and egress," Womer Benjamin explained.

"The ballfields desperately need restrooms, and the concessions stand will certainly be appreciated by ballplayers and families alike."

Assuming Council approves the bid legislation in September, work should begin shortly thereafter with expected completion in the spring.
