Aurora -- Twenty-three candidates have applied to succeed Police Chief Seth Riewaldt, who will retire no later than July 1.

Applications were due April 30 to the Ohio Police Chiefs Association, according to Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin, who is in charge of naming a successor.

She said a police chief search committee will review applications during the next week. She said the committee includes herself, Law Director Dean DePiero, psychologist Dr. Dixie Benshoff Ludick, Riewaldt and Councilman Dennis Kovach, with U.S. Marshal Peter Elliott as a consultant.

"There are multiple assessments that must be completed, as well as interviews," she said. "If all proceeds as anticipated, a successor should be named before Riewaldt's retirement in July."
