Portage Democrat judgeship seeker spends most in election so far

by MIKE SEVER RECORD-COURIER REPORTER Published:

Primary campaign expense reports showed most Portage County candidates are keeping spending on the low side.

The biggest spender so far, according to reports that were due April 24, was Bob Berger, who is running for the probate/juvenile court judgeship.

Berger, a Democrat, spent $26,590 and has $2,195 left in his campaign fund. Thomas Freeman, who is challenging Berger for the Democratic nomination, spent $3,423 and has $4, 871 remaining.

The second-highest spender was Sabrina Christian-Bennett, who is seeking the Republican nomination for Portage County commissioner. She spent $11,684 and has a balance of $1,712 remaining.

The county Republican party appointed Christian-Bennett to fill the unexpired term left when Tommie Jo Marsilio resigned from the board. Kristen Kline Morris of Garrettsville is challenging Christian-Bennett.

Kline Morris did not file an expense report. Candidates who spend less than $1,000 are not required by law to do so.

In the race for the Democratic nomination for county commissioner, Vicki Kline spent $6,593 and Angelo Battaglia spent $3,511. The two have similar amounts left to spend in the days up to the primary. Kline reported $3,387 on hand to $2,824 for Battaglia.

In the Republican juvenile/probate judicial race, Ravenna attorney Jonathan Jennings reported spending $3,114 with $4,024 left for the run to election day. David Brode, an assistant county prosecutor, reported spending no money in the primary and has $302 on hand.

There are no primary races for the Portage County Common Pleas judgeship, auditor or coroner.

In the Ohio House 76th District, which covers the northern part of Portage and most of Geauga County, Republican Sarah LaTourette reported raising $45,141 and spending $28,749, leaving her with $16,392 on hand. Republican Linda J. O'Brien, who is running a write-in campaign, reported raising $12,194 and spending $11,631, leaving $945 on hand.

Democrat Joseph Lanese, who is unchallenged for his party nomination, did not file a campaign expense report.
