High ropes challenge course likely coming to Aurora

Aurora -- A high ropes challenge course that would be a moneymaker for the city appears headed here.

GoApe, which has six locations, is coming to the city, according to Parks-Recreation Director Jim Kraus.

"We're awaiting a contract from them," Kraus said at the Feb. 17 recreation advisory committee meeting. "They're in the process of drafting a contract that they would send to us for our legal department to review. At that point, we'd go to City Council for approval."

A GoApe official could not immediately be reached for comment.

The course would be in the trees on the northeast side of Sunny Lake to the east of the north parking lot.

"In conversations and a property tour with the company, that was deemed the most desirable," Kraus said.

Kraus said he asked a GoApe representative what the time frame was.

"He said potentially early summer," Kraus said. "I'm not holding my breath for early summer. I'm thinking maybe late summer or early fall."

Kraus said GoApe is "totally different" from Streetsboro's Zip City, an indoor zipline course.

"It's a treetop adventure course," he said. "They put up cables and wires, connecting trees 30 feet above the ground. There are walking bridges and different things. You have to zipline from one spot to another."

Kraus said GoApe employees "give you a brief training in the beginning and show you what you need to do, then you clip yourself in and lead yourself through it. Our insurance company is comfortable with their limits of liability and everything that is in the contract."

Kraus said GoApe would charge admission, but the city would benefit from it on a percentage basis.

"We're currently working through those specific details in the contract with the company," Kraus said.
