Aurora -- A local resident who ran unsuccessfully in the four-person November 2013 race for a City Council at-large seat has been appointed to fill the remaining Council term of Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin.
Scott Wolf of Eldridge Road, who finished third in the November election, took the oath of office after being named to the post Jan. 30. After interviewing eight candidates Jan. 30, the seven Council reps present gave six votes to Wolf and one to former Councilman Robert Galaska Jr. Amy McDougald was the only one to vote for Galaska, while Ward 1 rep Jim Vaca was absent.
The other candidates were John Monroe, William E. Davidson, Melissa Franco, Dan Hamilton, Lawrence Schmidt and Kara Dombroski. Prior to the Jan. 30 special meeting, former Councilman Joe Kastelic and Fred Rote withdrew as candidates.
Wolf was appointed to serve on the planning commission near the end of 2013 by former Mayor James Fisher, and must give up that seat now that he's on Council. Womer Benjamin said she soon will appoint someone to fill the vacant planning panel seat.
The newest Councilman said he's looking forward to serving on Council and attacking the many issues that Council faces, including instituting connectivity measures, eventually renewing talks about a recreation/community center and addressing infrastructure needs.
ABOUT THE community center, he said he would like to see private entities take care of most of the funding, and does not favor raising taxes significantly.
He said he favors connecting some of the Town Center areas near the schools with bike paths and sidewalks, but does not believe many of the outlying neighborhoods need sidewalks.
During his professional career, Wolf has been a senior staff accountant, financial analyst and operations manager. Since 2000, he has worked for the Sherwin-Williams Co. out of Cleveland as a senior computer programmer and analyst.
During an internship to obtain his Ohio treasurer's license, which he held prior to starting his current position, he helped initiate the employee direct-deposit program for the Aurora schools.
He has managed employees in union and non-union environments, and has participated in union negotiations on behalf of employers.
Some of his other civic endeavors have included being an alternate for the city architectural board of review, a member of the endowment committee for the Church in Aurora and coaching pre-kindergarten soccer and flag football for the city recreation department. He presently maintains the website for the Aurora Co-op Nursery School.
Wolf's Council committee assignments are the buildings and grounds and audit committees and the firemen's dependency board.
