Chief justice will give oath to Aurora city officials

Mayor-Elect Ann Womer Benjamin has announced Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor of the Ohio Supreme Court will swear in city officials and Municipal Judge Barbara R. Oswick tonight (Dec. 30) at 6 p.m.

The ceremony will be in the Center for the Performing Arts (Aurora Community Theatre) in the library building on East Pioneer Trail.

O'Connor is the 10th chief justice in Ohio history and the first woman to lead Ohio's judicial branch, having joined the court as an associate justice in January 2003.

Her career in public service and the law spans three decades and includes service as a private lawyer, magistrate, common pleas court judge, prosecutor and justice.

She earned her bachelor of arts degree at Seton Hill College and her law degree from Cleveland Marshall College of Law. She was elected lieutenant governor in 1998.

The chief justice will swear in Womer Benjamin, Oswick and City Council representatives, with a reception following. The public is invited.
