Portage County Common Pleas Court Magistrate Robert Berger has announced he will run for the juvenile/probate judgeship in 2014.
Current Juvenile/Probate Judge Thomas Carnes is retiring after a quarter-century of service.
Berger, a Democrat, has more than 36 years of legal experience as a private attorney and a common pleas magistrate.
He was appointed magistrate in 2007 by Judge Laurie J. Pittman. He is the judicial officer who oversees complex civil cases and has presided over many bench and jury trials.
Berger said his experience as a private attorney and magistratesuits him to serve on the juvenile/probate bench.
Berger, a graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School, Kent State University and the University of Baltimore Law School, began his legal career as an associate in the law firm with Joseph Giulitto and Perry Dickinson.
He has served as past president of the Portage County Bar Association and received the Bar Association Humanitarian Award in 2008.
Berger is a U.S. Army veteran, member of the American Legion, and past commander of DAV Chapter 26. He served on the Portage County Veterans Commission from 1992-2007.
He resides with his wife, the former Patricia Sontag, and his son Colin, a sophomore at Roosevelt.
