Aurora -- Reflections, a newly constructed memory care community located adjacent to the Atrium at Anna Maria, "is truly one of a kind," according to Diane Barben, director of marketing at Anna Maria of Aurora.
"It's our mission to provide resident-centered care which addresses individual needs while promoting their independence and highest level of functioning possible," she said.
An open house for the general public is planned at Reflections, 800 N. Aurora Road, on Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m.
In addition, an opening event for city leaders and the business community is set for Oct. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.
Reflections is the newest addition to the Anna Maria of Aurora campus, with the facility located in the former Geauga Lake Hotel at North Aurora and Treat roads. The hotel shut its doors after Geauga Lake Park closed its amusement side in the fall of 2007. It was known by several other names over the years.
The assisted living memory care project will begin receiving new residents in November, Barben said. The Atrium at Anna Maria will consist of 73 apartments focused on independent atrium lifestyle, while 23 traditional assisted living units will open in February-March of 2014. Reservations are being taken. Email Barben at email@example.com, or call 330-562-7777.
"Reflections is expertly designed for those with dementia," Barben said. "From the floor to the ceiling, every detail has been selected with the needs of those with memory loss in mind. Private apartments and the Reflections neighborhood are designed to make residents feel more comfortable and secure, and encourage them to be more active and engaged in the memory care community.
"Colorful and textured design and décor serves to stimulate the senses," she added. "Life stations are strategically located and focused on careers, hobbies, interests and familiar daily activities.
"We pride ourselves in focusing on the resident's life story, daily routines and preferences -- connecting with the person, not the disability. We support family members by involving them in the care of their loved one to the degree they wish, and help them make each visit special."
According to the Atrium at Anna Maria webpage, there will be more than 20,000 square feet of common space that will include an indoor pool, walking trails, gardens and a recreation area.
Other features include pathways designed to encourage exercise while minimizing wandering, and memory boxes and wall coverings which direct patients to their rooms and activity areas to reduce confusion, anxiety and frustration.
Also, windows, walls, flooring materials and lighting are carefully designed to assist residents' vision and hearing in every area of the Reflections neighborhood; therapeutic kitchens and dining rooms preserve the home-like mealtimes; the courtyard provides a secured outdoor space that encourages exercise and relaxation; and a salon is professionally staffed to provide haircuts, color treatments, hair styling and manicures.
Other features that support an enriching lifestyle include a fitness center, theater, spa, grand dining hall, enclosed courtyards, library and a casual bistro and lounge.
