Absentee voting starts today for the Nov. 5 general election.
Voters can download applications for an absentee ballot from the website of the Portage County Board of elections (www.co.portage.oh.us/election/Current_Election-Nov5.htm) or apply in person at the board office in the Portage County Administration Build, 449 S. Meridian St., Ravenna.
Eligible residents have until 9 p.m. Oct. 7 to register to vote. The election office will be open until the deadline, said Brad Cromes, deputy director of the elections board.
From now until the registration deadline, residents can register to vote and cast their absentee ballots on the same day, Cromes noted.
Not sure what's on the Nov. 5 ballot? Lists of candidates and issues are also available on the website (www.co.portage.oh.us/election/Current_Election-Menu.htm).
While there are no national, state or county positions up for voters, this election does cover a multitude of local races. The election includes races for city councils in Ravenna, Kent, Aurora, Streetsboro and Tallmadge, and races for village council, township trustees and school boards across the county.
There is one late change in Streetsboro's council-at-large ballot. Sandy Smith Fischer submitted her withdrawal on Saturday, Cromes said. That leaves candidates Jeffrey M. Allen, Timothy J. Claypoole, Brett M. McClafferty and Stephen Michniak up for the three seats to be filled for a full term.
Notices of Smith Fischer's withdrawal will be posted with absentee ballots and at polling places on election day, Cromes said.
