Aurora -- A group of 12 senior residents and 12 staff members from Independence Village of Aurora enjoyed a day of kayaking July 26. It was the retirement home's second year going to Camp High in Mantua.
"We went last year and the residents had so much fun we decided to do it again," said Life Enrichment Coordinator Allison Tucker. "The number of residents grew this year, as last year only five participated in the trip."
The number of residents and staff members worked out perfectly so there were one resident and one staff member per kayak. The seniors rowed or just enjoyed the scenery on the 5-mile trip.
Executive Director Karen Harrell started the adventure when she demonstrated kayaking during a picnic at Lake Erie last year. "All the residents decided they wanted to try it, so we planned the trip," she explained.
Tucker posted a signup sheet for anyone who wanted to participate. Residents paid for their spots, and other arrangements were handled by Independence Village.
"We had our chef, one of our nurses and members of our management team join in," Tucker said, and family members of residents joined them.
Independence Village resident Bella Branscom brought her daughter-in-law along. "Both of us did some rowing," said Branscom. "I definitely felt it the next morning."
Branscom was initially shy about going, but decided the experience sounded worthwhile.
Overall, residents and staff members were pleased with the outcome. According to Tucker, Independence Village tries to find adventurous things for their residents to do that normally would not be done at retirement homes, such as fishing and other outdoor activities.
"This was my first time kayaking and I thought it was very lovely," said Branscom. "I'll probably go on the trip next year."
According to Tucker, the kayaking trip will be offered annually. "So many residents want to go after hearing the participants talk about how fun it was," said Tucker. "I believe next year we'll have even more residents join in."
"I think everybody should have a chance at it," added Branscom.
