Building projects picking up; Aurora city reports unveiled

The value of projects for which the city issued building permits in February totaled $2.7 million, as building activity started 2013 very strong.

Commercial construction was valued at $216,500 and included interior alterations at Drayer Physical Therapy ($179,000) and the Latest Scoop ($36,000) in Barrington Town Square and the Aurora Inn on Shawnee Trail ($1,500).

Residential projects were valued at $2.48 million, including four single-family homes, seven alterations and one each condo, addition and deck.

The city granted 70 licenses, including 51 for general work, nine for electrical, seven of heating-air conditioning and three for plumbing.

Revenue for the building department included $15,78 for building permits, $7,000 for licenses, $2,625 in impact fees, $123 in state fees, $3,850 from completion deposits and $25,000 from topography deposits for a total of $54,388.

City employees made 155 residential and 34 commercial-industrial inspections in February.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Seth Riewaldt reported 12 Part I -- the most serious -- offenses were reported in February, including 11 thefts and one motor vehicle theft.

Other offenses included fraud-identity thefts (seven), domestic violence and disorderly conduct (four each), vandalism-criminal mischief (two) and suicide attempt or threat (one).

Officers handled 3,109 calls, including 82 criminal-type, 93 traffic-related and 2,309 service-related.

There were two injury accidents out of the 26 total mishaps investigated by police.

Twenty-six adults were arrested for criminal offenses and 93 were cited for traffic violations, the most of which was for speeding (32). Other violations were parking (18), ignoring traffic control signals (six), driving under suspension (five), driving while intoxicated (four) and other (28).

TWO JUVENILES were cited for traffic offenses, and both were referred to Portage County Juvenile Court.

City personnel drove police vehicles 18,612 miles in February for a 2013 total so far of 36,512, compared to 34,199 last year.

Fire Chief David Barnes reported crews responded to 25 fire alarms and 101 rescue calls. The main reasons for rescue calls were falls (11), lift assists (1`0), breathing difficulties and chest pain (nine each) and weakness-dizziness and psychiatric problems (six each).

Thirty-seven trips were made to Twinsburg Family Health & Surgery Center, 10 to Ahuja Medical Center, eight each to Robinson Hospital and Hillcrest, five to UH-Twinsburg, two to Marymount, one each to Bedford and Southpointe, and no transport was required in 30 cases.

During 14 fire prevention inspections, hazards found included fire extinguishers out of date, fire alarms out of service, manual pull station access obstructed, exit signs backup power not functional, emergency lighting not functional, exit aisles blocked, too many extension cords in a socket and electrical covers missing.

Contractors hauled away 321 tons of trash and 93 tons of recyclables in February, a 78 percent to 22 percent ratio.

Receipts from water and sewer permits totaled $45,030, with Yorkshire Estates, Homestead and Hawthorn producing about $11,500 each and Barrington about $10,000.

The service department reported revenue of $602 in February, including $502 for vault interments, $75 for sales of lots and $25 for perpetual care. January's revenue was $4,709.

Four private septic systems were cleaned, which resulted in 7,200 gallons of sewage being removed. That brought the 2013 total to eight systems cleaned and 15,200 removed.
