Aurora -- The new city website, which is set to launch Feb. 7, will be more functional and more easy to use than the current one, according to Parks-Recreation Director Jim Kraus, who was in charge of the selection process to determine which website would best fit the city's needs.

The address of the new site -- www.auroraoh.com -- is the same as the current site.

"The new city website will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the current site, but also it will improve the functionality and interaction with the residents," Kraus said.

"Our staff will able to post news flashes, emergency alerts, frequently asked questions and videos. Residents will be able to submit various information online such as forms and payments for some items.

"Residents should really like the appearance of the new website, and they should find it more user friendly in navigating and finding information."

The cost of the new website is about $32,000, which will be paid over three years, he explained. The money will come from the city's capital improvement fund, he said.

Mayor James Fisher said he is excited about the new website.

"The city is trailing its peer group of cities with the quality, functionality and ultimately the value of its website," Fisher said, adding the city's website currently provides fundamental information only.

"Our new website will be defined as a contemporary management tool for the city," Fisher said. "The website will be of significant value to a wide variety of users as an interactive communication resource.

"It will become a marketing tool for the city. The elected officials and city directors will have the opportunity to proactively address the needs of the city with a reach to interested individuals or groups that has not existed in recent years.

"The new website will strengthen the link with its residents, support economic development and provide a platform for interactive communication."

Kraus said residents will be able to sign up for alerts or emails to be sent to them regarding items they subscribe to, as well as submit various informational requests regarding problems, concerns or projects. There will be an events calendar and announcements, along with increased information about city programs and services.

The new website will include an improved design and will be more colorful while the new home page will be more attractive than the current one, Kraus said.

"Residents will also be able to submit comments about various discussion topics," he added.
