Aurora -- Two local residents, a college student and a Parker Road resident, died of tragic circumstances in the early months of 2012.
Rebekah Blakkolb, a student at Bowling Green State University, died along with two other coeds in a March 2 collision when the girls and two others who survived were traveling on Interstate 75 north of Bowling Green and were struck by a wrong-way driver.
More than 1,500 people gathered on the campus of BGSU on March 16 to honor the memories of, and say goodbye to, the three sorority sisters who were on their way to a Detroit airport to leave on a spring break trip.
The driver who was going the wrong way on I-75, a 69-year-old woman from Perrysburg, also was pronounced dead at the scene after her 1999 Plymouth Breeze was engulfed in flames. She was driving alone.
Meanwhile, 59-year-old Patricia Beno died Feb. 9 after being severely injured in a fire the day before at her Parker Road home. She suffered burns and smoke inhalation.
The cause of the blaze was determined to be accidental and the result of "careless use of smoking materials," according to a spokesman for the Ohio fire marshal's office.
