AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- A vehicle struck three young people on South Main Street in Coventry Township late Sunday afternoon, leaving two girls dead.
Four students from Coventry Middle School were involved in the incident that took place just south of Akron, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. One boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition and another was uninjured.
The Summit County Sheriff's Office is investigating and the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office did not release any names of the dead girls, according to the ABJ.
Dorothy Koopmeiner told WEWS-TV that the collision happened in front of her house, where she saw a female driver get out of the vehicle and repeatedly yell, "I didn't see you."
Koopmeiner said young people headed to a store or park nearby often walk in the roadway along that stretch because it doesn't have sidewalks.
A makeshift memorial had been erected by neighbors and classmates at the site.
The school will open as planned today, according to social media posts from the district and phone calls to families in the school system.
