It's been a good year for local band Red Sun Rising.

One, Red Sun Rising was named "New Artist of the Year" at the 2016 Radio Contraband Awards.

Mike Protich of Tallmadge, vocals and guitar, said Red Sun Rising was performing at Rock on the Range in Columbus this past May when they found out.

"We were in a tent, doing media interviews, when [representatives from Radio Contraband] came up and said, 'by the way...,'" Protich said.

In addition, Red Sun Rising's second single "Emotionless" was the band's second #1 hit single on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart, according to information provided by the band's representatives. This marks the first time in over ten years that a band has had back to back #1s on the Rock Chart with its first two singles. The track is off their debut full-length album Polyester Zeal via Razor & Tie, which features their first chart topper "The Otherside."

Red Sun Rising, which includes Protich, former Tallmadge resident Ryan Williams (guitar), Ricky Miller (bass/vocals), Dave McGarry (guitar/vocals)and Pat Gerasia (drums), will open for 3 Doors Down Aug. 28 at the newly-renovated Goodyear Theater in Akron. Pop Evil also will perform.

The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. The Goodyear Theater is at 1201 E. Market St. For tickets, call 877-435-9849.

This concert is one of the first in the 3 Doors Down national tour "Us and The Night."

"We've done festivals with them, although we've never toured with them," Protich said. "So we already know the band members."

The tour is scheduled to wrap up in October. And what is next after the tour?

"We are going to Europe for the first time," Protich said.

Protich said that the Goodyear Theater show will "be more special than an ordinary show."

"We are from Akron, and we are always received very well," he said.

As well as audience participation, the audience can expect a high energy show, Protich said. While Red Sun Rising will perform its radio singles, they like to change up the playlist, he added.

Protich added that a Red Sun Rising performance is truly a live performance.

"We play all of our instruments," he said. "We don't use tracks. We do all of our harmonies live."
