Summit Artspace Gallery is once again looking for area artists newest work for its Fresh Art Annual to be installed at Summit Artspace galleries from March 7 through April 12. In the past, this show has always had a theme or secret ingredient. This year, to encourage more artists and area college students to submit to the show, we are looking for work created in 2013 or 2014 and the freshest work in the area. There will be $1,000 in cash prizes distributed to artists and the judge will choose the exhibition based on a contemporary approach to subject, materials and innovation.
This is the 10th Fresh Art Annual juried show, which is open to professional and student artists who live, work or attend colleges or universities in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties. It attracts unique works in a wide variety of media by both emerging young artists and established art professionals. The exhibition is sponsored by the Summa Foundation and Akron Area Arts Alliance is indebted to their support for the creative in our community.
This year's judge is Alexandra Nicholis Coon, the Executive Director of the Massillon Museum. She has been with the Massillon Museum since 2001, serving as museum curator from 2003 to 2010.
Submissions will be accepted Feb. 27 from noon to 7 p.m. at Summit Artspace, 140 E. Market Street in Downtown Akron. Up to two entries are allowed per artist, and there is a $15 entry fee. The exhibition opens on March 7 and continues through April 12. More details and an application form are available at www.akronareaarts.org or by calling 330-376-8480.
Prize winners will be announced at a special public reception March 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. Representatives from the Summa Foundation will distribute the prizes that evening at 6:30 p.m.
Summit Artspace is in the historic Akron Beacon Journal building at 140 E. Market St., one block east of the Akron Art Museum.
