'The Wiz' returns

to Akron Civic

Youth Excellence Performing Arts Workshop presents an encore performance of "The Wiz" on April 6 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at The Akron Civic Theatre.

The winner of seven Tony awards, this Broadway musical sets Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz to music in a mix of rock, gospel, and soul. It will all be brought to life on The Civic stage by a cast of more than 60 of the area's talented young people.

Roman alphabet topic of meeting

Scripts & Scribes will next meet April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Fairlawn West Church of Christ, 2095 W. Market St. in Akron.

The topic, taught by Cuyahoga Falls resident Larry Gabler, will be Peter Thornton's pressure sensitive Romans, a modernized-looking Roman alphabet.

Those attending should bring a No. 2 or other soft-leaded pencil and paper, particularly graph paper. Also, calligraphers are encouraged to bring what they have been working on.

Gallery 732 announces new artist for April

Gallery 732 will highlight artist Susan M. Birgeles. Birgeles has studied both in Chicago and Cleveland under various artists. She is member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, Hudson Society of Artists, Woman's Art League and the Crooked River Gang.

Gallery 732 at Akron Woman's City Club, 732 W. Exchange St. It is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Theater seeks actors for 'Music Man'

Weathervane Playhouse will have auditions for "The Music Man" by Meredith Wilson on April 7 and 8.

Auditions, which will be from 4 to 9 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. April 8, will be at the theater, 1301 Weathervane Lane in Akron. Auditions are by appointment; call 330-836-2626.

Those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of music and dress to dance. There may be readings from the script. Plan on auditions taking about 30 minutes.

Auditions are open to anyone ages 6 and up, and families are encouraged to audition together. All roles are open. Those interested in the barbershop quartet should audition together.

Rehearsals will begin April 14 at 6 p.m. They will generally be Monday through Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sundays 6 to 9 p.m.

Director is Sarah Elaine Bailey, with music direction by Sharon Dobbins Alberson.

The show runs from June 6 through 30, with shows on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

Actors needed for 'House For Sale'

Western Reserve Playhouse will have auditions for "House For Sale" by Ron Hill on April 14 and 15.

The play will be directed by Bill Morgan and Pat Hudson. Auditions will be at the theater, 3326 Everett Rd. at the Bath/ Richfield Township line.

The script calls for a cast of five women and six men. Auditions are at 1 p.m. on April 14 and 7 p.m. on April 15. Actors will read from the script.

Glen Martin, a 70-something widower in failing health, stubbornly resists his daughter's attempts to get him to sell his home and move in with her and he husband. In his search for a solution to remaining in his home Glen advertises for a roommate, pulling in several odd and interesting characters. Once the prospective roommates arrive, he quickly loses control of the situation and mayhem erupts. Max, Glen's crony and next door neighbor, offers his advise and becomes entangled in the melee, taking the situation from bad to worse.
