Aurora School Board Actions-May 3

At its April 24 meeting, the Aurora Board of Education took the following actions:

Awarded a contract for the five-year lease/purchase of five 77-passenger school buses to Cardinal Bus Sales at an annual cost of $85,258.

Awarded a contract to PIer Associates to replace the water tower for Harmon School at a cost of $46,304.

Awarded one-year teaching contracts to Lauren Skonieczny (100 percent) and Evan Karnoupakis and Elizabeth Schaefer (50 percent each).

Awarded two-year teaching contracts to Heather Berlin, Brian Callahan, Sarah Dixon, Lindsay Draime, Jane Ann Keenan, Dmitri Kourenny, Lisa Leone, Edwin Nabring, Melissa Sanford, Julia Smerkar and Ashley Tyler.

Awarded continuing contracts to Kathryn Harwood and Kristina Vidziunas.

Suspended teacher and tutor contracts of Brian Callahan, Evan Karnoupakis, Elizabeth Schaefer and Lauren Skonieczny because of a reduction in enrollment and financial reasons.

Accepted the resignation of Aurora High custodian Michele Powers for retirement purposes after 15 years of service.

Accepted resignations of licensed tutors Jennifer Holdren, Karen Landolph, Holly Rankin and Jill Whims-Semancik, who are in the non-public auxiliary service program.

Employed Ronald Burns Jr. as AHS night supervisor custodian after having completed a 100-work day introductory period.

Employed support staff substitute Renee Zembala.

Took notice that all supplemental and extended time contracts for the 2016-17 will expire at the end of the school year.

Employed the following tutors for 2017-18: Laura Arters, Gina Benisek, Kathleen Christian, LIsa Cuneo, Jennifer Golec, Sarah Ingram, Evan Karnoupakis, Amy Keller, Laurie Kidwell, Kathryn Kindry and Julie Morris.

Laid off building secretary Mary Jurkiewicz effective July 1 because of financial reasons.

Non-renewed the long-term teaching contracts of Leigh Bryner, Judy Eastman, Aubrey Heiskell, Mary Ann Kolosi and Vincent LaPorte.

Employed several dozen substitute teachers and homebound tutors for 2017-18.

Awarded extended time contracts to more than a dozen employees.

Granted a parental leave of absence to AHS music teacher Sarah Dixon effective Aug. 25 through the remainder of the 2017-18 year.

Endorsed observance of National Volunteer Week from April 23-29 and Staf Appreciation Week from May 8-12.

Accepted the final audit report for July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

Recognized several Aurora High winter sports athletes and a handful of students who earned honors in the 18th annual Aurora Orchestra Association solo competition.

Accepted donations from the All-Sports Boosters ($12,000) and Class of 1976 ($1,500).

Approved revised policies dealing with cooperative educational programs, testing programs, truancy and school property disposal procedures.

Approved an emergency closing of the schools on April 7.
