Aurora Cooperative Preschool, which operates out of a building at Centerville Mills Park in Bainbridge has welcomed new director Michelle Kalista to help the school reach its next level of success.
She has a wealth of administrative and program experience, starting as a parent at the preschool in 2008. She professionally lobbied for public education for 10 years and holds a master's degree in public administration.
The school also has made some additions to its teaching team. The lead teachers are either degreed in early childhood education or hold a child development associate credential, and work collaboratively to ensure the highest quality learning and development take place across all of the age groups -- 2 to 5 years old.
The co-op preschool also introduced an extended day option for its 4-year old class in January. The offering combines lunch bunch with one additional hour of kindergarten readiness programming.
The 4's extended day option is designed to give students additional time on task and experience a schedule that more closely mimics a full kindergarten day. Students learn lunchroom etiquette, work on literacy, phonemic awareness and number sense, build listening skills, have additional opportunities to work to improve fine motor skills, and continue to develop socially and emotionally.
Participating students attend their regularly scheduled 4's class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and on Fridays they transition to lunch bunch and then back into the classroom for an additional hour of enrichment until 2 p.m.
The extended day option has been a huge success this year, according to officials, and the school will expand the option for the 2017-18 school year.
