Aurora High artists excel in 2017 competition

AURORA -- Local high school art studens were very successful in the 2017 Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art Competition.

The judges boiled down 124 excellent portfolio entries to eight gold winners and selected from more than 4,319 entries only 473 silver and gold key winners.

An exhibition of all silver key, gold key and portfolios is on display until Feb. 1 in the Campus Center (next to the Fine Arts Building) and also in the Fine Arts Building at Kent State University's Stark Campus.

Building hours for the Campus Center and Fine Arts are Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gold key and silver key winners will attend an awards ceremony Jan. 28 at the Stark Campus' Professional Education and Conference Center. High school seniors will be recognized at 10 a.m. and grades 7 to 11 at noon.

Portfolios forwarded to New York City for national adjudication came from AHS's Caeley Blechschmid, Alexandra Mehallis and Sakurako Reed. That is the most outstanding level of achievement demonstrated by seniors.

Artwork demonstrating the highest levels of originality, technique and personal vision are awarded gold keys and are forwarded to New York City for national adjudication.

The following seven AHS students earned gold key lapel pins and certificates: Blechschmid, Josie Hydell, Lara Ketonen (2), Alyssa Korecky (5), Colleen Lacy (2), Mehallis and Dominic Risko

The following AHS students received silver key lapel pins for artwork demonstrating advanced artistic achievement worthy of recognition on the regional level: Korecky (2), Lacey (2), Kate McCray, Reed, Deanna Sagaris, Kathryn Slates, Blechschmid, Alka Ghadiyaram, Hydell and Rees Jones.

Earning honorable mention for artwork demonstrating artistic quality and potential are:

Blechschmid (5), Jared Caponi, Amairani Chavez (6), Ghadiyaram, Colin Gojdics, Olivia Hendershott, Amanda Hsieh, Jones, Ketonen (2), Korecky (5), Justin Kovalycsik (3), Brooke Kozar (6), Lacey (3), Mehallis (2), Reed (4), Sophia Roberto, Sagaris (7), Slates (6) and Madison Smith (2).

Art teachers Brian Coponi and Sean Berrodin congratulate all students who entered and all who were recognized in this year's show. And they invite all staff members, parents and students to visit the art exhibition.
