AHS pupil now part of
national scholars unit
Charlene Westfall, an Aurora High School junior, has been selected to become a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, which recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated leadership, scholarship and community commitment.
Membership entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.
"I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and commitment that Charlene has demonstrated to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence," said NSHSS Founder and chairman Claes Nobel.
"She is now a member of a unique community of scholars -- a community that reprsents our very best hope for the future."
Westfall is the daughter of Bryan and Donna Westfall. She participates in Irish dancing, modeling, pageantry and volunteers with Freedom Greyhound Rescue. She does community service as part of her reign as Teen Miss Northern Ohio, and recently scored high at the National Dream Girls USA pageant.
Girls on Run sessions
are offered at Harmon
Registration for Girls on the Run sessions in Northeast Ohio begins Aug. 21. Harmon School will be one of the sites, with the 10-week session starting the week of Sept. 15 and ending in November.
The program is for girls in grades 3 to 8, and focuses on improving confidence of young girls while preparing them for a 5K run. It includes running, games and discussions about issues important to pre-teens.
Online registration begins Aug. 21 at 9:30 a.m. the sessions at Harmon will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 to 4 p.m. For more details, call 234-206-0786 or visit www.gotgreatersummit.org.

The Harmon-High School PTO has changed officers. The current board is as follows: Lori Bopp, president; Tina Gerber, vice president for high school; Julie Love, VP for Harmon; Kelli DeMicco, treasurer; and Tammy Samarasinghe, secretary. Band at Cedar Point
Aurora High School's marching band will perform Aug. 14 at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky. All area residents are invited to make the trip to see the band perform for the first time in the 2014-15 school year.
