Aurora students land

college scholarships

Three Aurora students have been awarded college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships.

Madeline Farr, who plans to study writing in college, has been awarded a scholarship to attend Kenyon College in Gambier. She is a 2014 graduate of Aurora High School.

Mitch Pollock, a 2014 graduate of Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, was awarded a scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He hopes to study engineering.

Skylar Dittrich, a 2014 graduate of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, was awarded a scholarship to attend Washington University in St. Louis, where she wants to study business management.

This year, about 4,100 college-sponsored merit scholarships have been awarded. They provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Parents forum slated

The Aurora schools' special services depatment will sponsor a parents communication forum Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Leighton School media center. The topic will be "How IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) Funds Are Spent." Dr. Kathy Mrsnik will be the presenter.

Schools' hours listed

Until Aug. 1, the Aurora Board of Education office is open Mondays to Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday hours will resume Aug. 1.

Aurora High School is open Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Harmon, Leighton, Craddock and Miller schools offices are closed in July, but will be open Mondays to Fridays as of Aug. 1 as follows: Harmon from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the other three schools from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sale deadline is near

The Aurora Schools PTO's prepackaged school supplies sale continues through July 28 for the 2014-15 school year. Online ordering is available, and orders can be customized.

For more details and contact information, check the schools' website at www.aurora-schools.org for a flier. The pricing listed excludes tissues, Ziplock bags and hand sanitizer. Prices will change if an order is customized.

Opening dates noted

Here are some important dates for the opening of the 2014-15 school year: Aug. 19 -- opening staff meeting; Aug. 20 -- new student orientation; Aug. 21 -- first day for all students; Sept. 1 -- no classes on Labor Day.
