Fifth-grade teacher Jackie Petak has decided to retire at the end of the school year after teaching for 18 years at VCA and 33 years total. She started out as a VCA parent 22 years ago.

VCA's boys and girls basketball seasons are under way. On the girls team are: eighth-graders Kylie Aiken and Emma Morgan; seventh-graders Lindsey Curcio and Lei Scruggs; sixth-graders Sarah Bradford, Olivia Heus, Coco Miller and Moyin Majekodunmi; and fifth-graders Jillian Iannetta, Anna Lytle and Jordan Seiple.

On the boys team are: eighth-graders Brad Bierworth, Austin Fisher, Ryan Klemmer, Michael Moore, Ryker Papa and Alex Williams; seventh-graders Chris Deciopeda, Matt Genry, Robby Levak and Matteo Tiber; and sixth-graders Daniel Burgoyne, Brett Carroscia, Jordan Fisher, Jackson Iannetta and Ian Leach.

VCA's 12th annual bowlathon will be March 1. Last year, the event raised more than $16,000. The annual Big Night Out and silent auction will be March 15. The latter is the school's biggest social event of the year.

Student council sponsored three main events prior to the year-end holidays -- a food drive for the Volunteers of America, selling Thankful Thoughts candygrams and carolling through the Geauga Lake neighborhood.

Two VCA alumni -- Brian Petak, son of fifth-grade teacher Jackie, and Daniel Richards, son of a former librarian, ran in the Columbus Marathon during the fall. Their friend -- Jon Mathosiah -- who went to CVCA with them joined them.

Administrator Dale Moncrief reports that a donor has offered to match every dollar pledged to the Eagle Fund from now through the end of March. Every gift is tax-deductible.

This year's VCA enrollment is 276, up from last year. This year, classrooms were equipped with new projectors, while new computer stations are in the tech lab and grades 4-8 classrooms.

VCA students return to class Jan. 5. Other coming events are: Feb. 1 -- annual meeting; Feb. 4 -- spirit night at Chick-fil-A; Feb. 8 -- community open house; Feb. 14 -- teacher in-service day; March 14 -- ACSI regional speech meet at VCA; March 21-22 -- "Music Man Jr" musical production.
