Ribs will be featured

at VFW 2629's event

Aurora VFW Post 2629's annual rib burnoff will be Aug. 23 from 2 p.m. to midnight at North Aurora Road and East Boulevard next to Fire Station 2.

Ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork, corn and other food will be available from 2 to 8 p.m. Rib cookers are needed, and will vie for $900 in prizes, including a $400 top prize.

The Thrown Together band will perform from 3 to 7 p.m. and My Drunken Uncle will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight. There will be the usual games such as a beer slide and Left-Right-Center.

Rib cookers can sign up and information is available by calling the post at 330-562-7274.

Storytime registration

set to start on Aug. 18

Registration for fall storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers begins Aug. 18 at Aurora Memorial Library. The five-week long session starts the week of Sept. 8.

Tiny Tot Read and Play for infants up to 2 1/2 years old will be Mondays at 11:15 a.m. in the downstairs gallery. It is designed for infants and very young children accompanies by a parent or caregiver. It features short stories, songs and finger plays, followed by an unstructured play time.

Toddler storytime for ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 will be Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and preschool sessions for ages 3 1/2 to 5 will be Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m.

Children accompanied by a parent or caregiver are welcome to the two above session, and each session will feature theme-based stories, songs and finger plays, followed by a craft.

Registration is required, and patrons can call or visit the library to sign up. More information on these and other library programs is available at www.portagelibrary.org.

BZA to discuss items

Five items are on the agenda at the city's board of zoning appeals meeting tonight (Aug. 13) at 7 in town Hall.

Members will consider variances for several signs at Ganley Auto's two dealerships on West Garfield Road, directional signs on Cranberry Trail and Walnut Ridge in Hawthorn of Aurora, a fence contiguous with the property line for Michael Bennett on McRoberts Avenue and a rear-yard setback for a shed for Nick Zavitz on North Parkview Drive.

'Seussical' at theater

Aurora Community Theatre children's summer workshop ends this weekend with performances of "Seussical," a musical based on the books and characters of Dr. Seuss.

The cast includes 60 children from Aurora and surrounding communities. Performances are Aug. 16 at 1 and 5 p.m..

Tickets cost $5 and go on sale Aug. 14 at 8:45 a.m. at the theater and will also be available at the box office one half hour prior to each performance.
