Hike slated at sanctuary
The Moebius Nature Center’s program “Stories in the Snow: An Animal Tracks Discovery Hike” will take place Jan. 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Aurora Audubon Sanctuary on East Pioneer Trail. Participants should meet at the parking lot on the south side of the road, a few hundred feet east of Page Road. They should dress warmly and register at www.mymnc.org.
Storytimes seek youths
Registration is still under way at Aurora Library for winter storytimes, which begin the week of Jan. 28. Online signups are not available, but patrons can visit the library or call 330-562-6502 during operating hours.
Storytimes include a Tiny Tot Read & Play program for infants to 2 1/2 years old on Mondays at 11:15 a.m. Short stories, songs and finger plays are followed by an unstructured play time.
Toddler storytimes for ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 are on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and preschool sessions for 3 1/2 to 5 years are Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. The latter feature winter-themed stories, songs, finger plays and a craft.
Library officers in place
The following have been elected officers of the Portage County District Library board: Roberta Zuver, president; Deborrah Defer, secretary; and Stephen Spencer of Aurora, vice president. They officially began their term during the Jan. 17 board meeting. The board meets the third Thursday of each month (except for March) at 5:30 p.m at various branch locations.
ACT positions are open
Aurora Community Theatre will offer two workshops, each two weeks long, this summer, and are seeking staff members to run the sessions, which are for children entering grades 2 to 9 in the fall of 2013.
Children will learn about acting, singing, dancing and all facets of staging a performance. Workshops will be July 21 to Aug. 17. Paid positions open are artistic director, music director, accompanist (can be the same as music director) and choreographer (can be the same as artistic director).

ACT auditions scheduled;
nine roles must be filled
Auditions for Aurora Community Theatre’s spring musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” will take place March 3 and 4 at 7 p.m., with callbacks scheduled for March 5 if necessary.
Those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of music in their key (preferably not from the show) and bring sheet music, resume and head shot. An accompanist will be provided. No appointments are necessary.

The show will run April 26 to May 18, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays, except for Sundays, May 5 and 12.
Nine roles are available, including Jesus Christ, Judas, Mary Magdalene, Simon and Pontius Pilate.
Property tax due Feb. 25
The deadline for property owners to pay their first half 2012 real estate taxes is Feb. 25. Those who do not pay by the deadline are subject to a 10 percent penalty.
Aurora’s total tax rate is 102.63 mills — 80.93 for schools, 7.68 for the city, 13.62 for the county and 0.40 for a special district. The effective millage for residential and agricultual properties is 63.56.
City panels set meetings
Aurora City Council’s next meeting is Jan. 28 in Town Hall. The committee of the whole will convene at 6 p.m., with the regular session following at 7.
The city’s Civil Service Commission will meet tonight (Jan. 23) at 6:30, while the architectural board of review will meet Jan. 24. The next planning commission meeting is Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
Drug dropoff box at PD
Local residents are reminded that the Aurora Police Department has installed a dropoff box at its front door which will allow all residents to drop off unused / unwanted perscriptions 24 hours a day.
Library’s hours are noted
Local residents are reminded that Aurora Library’s hours are as follows: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
Theater classes slated
Patti Schaefer’s Performing Arts program, in cooperation with Aurora Community Theatre, will resume classes Feb. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m.
