Gun violence to be focus

Congregation Kol Chadash will have its annual social action Shabbat on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. This year's education service is focused on gun violence, and gun violence prevention advocate Lori O'Neill will speak.

She became an advocate in 1994 when the Ohio Legislature introduced a bill to allow concealed handguns to be carried in public. She and a partner created the Where Did the Gun Come From? public education campaign

She served as president and vice president for two years each of the Million Mom March's Cleveland chapter, launched Citizens for Safety in 2006 and is a consultant to public officials, political groups and community organizations on the issue of gun violence prevention.

Murry will visit Our Lady

Youngstown Diocese Bishop George Murry will visit Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on March 3 at 2 p.m. for confirmation for OLPH and St. Joseph-Mantua candidates. There will be no eighth-grade PSR on March 3-4.\

A St. Patrick Day party will be March 10. Cost is $11 for adults age 12 and older and $9 for children ages 5 to 11. Tickets are on sale after Masses and in the office. Church cleanup for Easter will be March 11 from 9:30 to 1:30 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Lenten soup suppers will begin Feb. 27 and run on Wednesdays until March 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the parish center. A 10-minute faith witness talk will also take place each evening.

St. Joseph in Mantua will offer a penance service on March 18 at 7 p.m.

Other coming events are: Feb. 28 -- Spirited Seniors at noon and Boy Scouts at 7 p.m.; March 1 -- Stations of the Cross at 3 and 7 p.m. and youth ministry retreat team meeting at 6:30 p.m.

March 2 -- Boy Scouts merit badge at 9 a.m.; March 3 -- CLOW at 11 a.m. and March Madness youth ministry at 6:30 p.m.; March 5 -- Eucharistic Adoration from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Bible study at 7 p.m.

World prayer day slated

World Day of Prayer will be March 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Aurora Mennonite Church. A light lunch will follow the service and child care will be provided.

The Mennonite church will collect items for Haven of Rest's Hope Tote Campaign during most of March. Information about the bags is on the table in the lower foyer. Monetary donations are also accepted.

The vacation Bible school committee decided on Standard Publishing's VBS curriculum with the theme "God's backyard Bible camp: Under the stars." Dates are July 22-26.

UMC activities scheduled

Activities coming up at Aurora United Methodist Church are: Feb. 27 -- TOPS at 6 p.m. and small group Bible study at Radovicks; March 1 -- World Day of Prayer at 10:30 a.m. at Aurora Mennonite; March 3 -- Sunday school at 9:15 a.m., worship-junior church at 10:30 and confirmation class from noon to 2 p.m.; March 5 -- praise team rehearsal and men's fellowship at 7:30 p.m.

Circle meets; potluck set

Circle 3H will meet at the Church in Aurora in the morning March 1 prior to going to the World Day of Prayer service at Aurora Mennonite.

A memorial service for Barbara Tatum will be March 2 at 2 p.m. in the church. March Spires are available on the Hunt table in the church's Great Hall.

A potluck dinner will be March 5 at 6:30 p.m. Participants are urged to take a side dish, entree or dessert to share. The church will provide corned beef.

Bring a Friend Sunday will be March 10. There will be a special coffee hour and a photographer to shoot photos of members and their friends.

The Middlers group will have a bake sale March 3 in the fellowship hall. Proceeds will go to the Mason Woods Charitable Foundation based in Columbus, which raises money to help families of terminally ill children.

The Choralier choir will present a cantata called "A Technicolor Promise" on March 17.

The church will host a Portage County family-to-family education program for 12 weeks starting March 16. It is open to anyone with a family member or friend who has a mental illness. See the bulletin board in the fellowship hall for details.

Baptist work day slated

Since the First Baptist Church's one-day missions trip has been postponed, an all-church work day will take place March 23, when various projects will be tackled, with a focus on changing light bulbs in the auditorium.

A sports camp theme is being planned for vacation Bible school this summer. Dates will be July 10-13 in the evenings and July 14 in the afternoon. Participants will be drilled in basketball, flag football, and cheerleading
