New vehicle sales up

9 % in July in region

Sales of new vehicles in Northern Ohio rose almost 9 percent in July 2014, compared to July 2013, the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association said.

Officials said the numbers are especially impressive because July 2013 rang up an increase of more than 17 percent over the year previously. It was the 19th straight month of sales increases over the same period the year before.

"Clearly, these numbers represent strong and steady growth for the retail automotive industry in Northern Ohio," said Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. "We expected summer to be strong, but this is a pleasant surprise."

Franchised new vehicle dealers in the 21-county area served by the association were 23,939 this year, compared to 22,004 last year.

Ford had a good month, with sales increasing more than 10 percent over July 2013 at 3,909. Chevrolet was close behind at 3,592, a boost of 12 percent, while Honda was third at 2,097 and Toyota was fourth at 1,976.
