COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Columbus police say charges are pending against a 10-year-old boy who brought an unloaded gun to school and said he found it on his way there.
A police spokesman said Wednesday that a teacher discovered the gun while helping the boy with his backpack the previous afternoon at a Columbus school northeast of downtown. The teacher immediately notified authorities.
Sgt. Rich Weiner (WY'-nur) says the child told police he found the gun while walking to school. Weiner says there was no indication the boy intended to harm anyone.
Weiner says the boy is in the custody of a parent.
The report came as schools put extra focus on security after 20 children and six adults were killed last week in the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
