WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) -- German media reports suggest Bernd Schuster is poised to take over as Wolfsburg coach after the club's interim coach stepped down on Thursday.
Wolfsburg says on its website that Lorenz-Guenther Koestner and assistant coach Alexander Strehmel are returning to its under-23 team after leading the side from bottom to 12th in the Bundesliga and into the German Cup quarterfinals.
The 60-year-old Koestner was in his second stint as interim coach after taking over following the departure of Felix Magath on Oct. 25.
Kicker magazine says former Germany international Schuster is on the verge of signing a deal until 2015.
The former Real Madrid coach has been out of work since leaving Turkish side Besiktas in March 2011.
